CULTURE/SOCIETY - How to Celebrate the Festival of Sleep Day

The Festival of Sleep Day was created for people that would like to get some "shut eye" and relaxation after the holidays. After the Christmas shopping and present opening deadlines and the New Year celebrations, it's time to celebrate -- in "Sleep Land". Observe this wacky and unofficial holiday on January 3rd.

MY LIFE: My Daughter Must Have Had Fun

This started out as a tweet for my Twitter page, but it just became too long. - OlderMusicGeek

Well, my daughter obviously had fun at the overnight camping trip that her after school program had organized. I don't think they camped per se, but rather slept in cabins. But I don't know because I haven't had a chance to talk to her about it. Why haven't I had a chance? Well, let me tell you.

She got home yesterday afternoon and went to her mom's place. I went over to her mom's place later in the early evening to pick her up.

I knocked on the door and there was no answer. So I knocked again. Still no answer. I texted my daughter letting her know I was there. No reply. I called her cell. I got the voice mail. I called her mom's land line. I got the answering machine. I left a message saying I had been there and that I'd see her at home. - I only live a block away. - I tried knocking one more time, but of no avail.

My daughter had sent me a text earlier in the day asking if she could spend the night with a friend. So I called the friend's mother. She said my daughter wasn't there and hadn't even heard about her spending the night. She asked me worriedly where I thought my daughter could be. I casually said she probably just fell asleep and didn't hear me knock.

And sure enough, 45 minutes later, my daughter comes strolling into our apartment saying she had fallen asleep and didn't hear me knock... or call... or text. I told her I assumed as much and didn't worry about then.

Unfortunately, somebody did. We got a call about a half hour later from the mother of the friend asking with concern if I heard from my daughter and knew where she was. I told her she was home and had fallen asleep before, and I apologized for not letting her know.

As for my daughter, when she got to my place, she immediately plopped on the couch and watched tv... and fell asleep shortly thereafter. I suggested she go to her bedroom and watch tv there... twice. Both times, she mumbled something back incomprehensible and fell asleep again within ten minutes.

The third time, I finally made her get up and go to her bedroom.

Then when I went to bed, I checked in on her. She lying fully dressed on a pile of blankets with her glasses on and her mouth open and a bit of dribble coming down. I grabbed what bit of the blanket was loose and covered her up. That woke her up enough to take off her glasses and get covered properly.

And she continued to sleep until I had to leave for work at 7:30 the next morning when I woke her to send her to her mom's. And she barely woke up then!

CULTURE/SOCIETY:OlderMusicGeek's Parent's Guide To Stress Relief

This is from, and is NOT some reprinted material. - OlderMusicGeek

At my work, we were given a form on how to deal with stress. I said as parents, some of us knew how to deal with stress. So with my help of a couple of my co-workers, I present OlderMusicGeek's Parent's Guide To Stress Relief.

If the other person is stressed -
- Get over it!
- Deal!
- Cope!
- Wah wah wah oh boo hoo hoo!
- Suck it up, nancy boy!
- You want something to cry about?!
- You know what will take your mind off that? housework!
- Well maybe if you didn't (fill in the blank), it never would have happened!
- If you would (fill in the blank) like i told you, that never would have happened!
- If you'd act more like (fill in the blank), you wouldn't have these problems!
- Maybe if you'd learn to act like a human being...?
- Maybe if you didn't act like a complete maniac...?

Or if you want take a more sympathetic route -
- You think that's bad, you should hear what happened to me when i was your age!

If you're the one who's stressed -
- You know it looks like a good day to play outside. I don't care if the wind chill is negative, bundle up!
- You haven't played with so-and-so in a long time.
- I'll get to that soon as I'm down with this important work on the computer. I don't care if it looks like such-and-such a game.
- This can't wait until my nap is over. So what? I sleep with the tv on!

CULTURE/SOCIETY: A Pirate Translation

This har post be by me, not som' reprinted piece. - Dirty Sam Read aka Mad Tom Storm aka OlderMusicGeek.

If ye be readin' my blog afore, ye be knowin' me interest in the language of pirates! I be supplyin' a numb'r of translations afore, so I be givin' ya all anot'er. This har is Hamlet's siloquy translated to Pirate speak. I be havin' halp from this har translator - Talk Like A Pirate Day translator.

A sea dog says 't this way:
Ta be, or nay t' be--that be th' question:
Whether `tis nobler in th' head t' suffer
Th' slings an' arrows o' outrageous fortune
Or t' take arms against a sea o' troubles
An' by opposin' end them. T' sink t'Davy Jones' locker, t' sleep--
Nay more--an' by a sleep t' say we end
Th' heartache, an' th' chestfull o' natural shocks
That flesh be heir t'. `Tis a consummation
Devoutly t' be wished. T' sink t'Davy Jones' locker, t' sleep--
T' sleep--perchance t' dream: ay, thar`s th' rub,
Fer in that sleep o' Davy Jones' locker what dreams may come
When we be havin' shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause. Thar`s th' respect
That makes calamity o' so long life.
Fer who would bear th' whips an' scorns o' time,
Th` oppressor`s wrong, th' proud man`s contumely
Th' pangs o' despised love, th' law`s delay,
Th' insolence o' office, an' th' spurns
That patient merit o' th` unworthy takes,
When he hisself might his quietus make
Wi' a bare bodkin? Who would fardels bear,
T' grunt an' sweat under a weary life,
But that th' dread o' somethin' after Davy Jones' locker,
Th' undiscovered country, from whose bourn
Nay traveller returns, puzzles th' will,
An' makes us rather bear them ills we be havin'
Than fly t' others that we know nay o'?
Thus conscience does make yeller bellies o' us all,
An' thus th' native hue o' resolution
Be sicklied o`er wi' th' pale cast o' thought,
An' enterprise o' great pitch an' moment
Wi' this regard the'r currents turn awry
An' lose th' name o' action. -- Soft ye now,
Th' fair Ophelia! -- Nymph, in thy orisons
Be all me sins remembered.
Ya landlubber!

it's impossible to read or write emails, tweets and blogs online. So I’m doing them on my thumb drive and downloading them later. :)
but we're not suppose to use thumb drives at work either! afraid we're download info that we shouldn't have.

If they ever stop us from using mp3 players, I’m out of here. It’s the only way I stay awake at work!

my daughter couldn't find her glasses this morning! where did i find them? in the bag of chips she was eating from last night!

and i only saw the glasses, cus the bag was open - as usual - and i wanted to close it before the chips went stale!

i'm sorry, but having taught english for 6 1/2 years, i just have to ask - why do so many twitters spell great as g-r-a-t-e?

and yes, i know that question is ironic from someone who can't bother with capital letters!

CULTURE/SOCIETY: A Parental Story

This is me, NOT some reprinted piece. But if you've kept up on my "tweets" from my Twitter account, you've heard the main details. - OlderMusicGeek

My daughter couldn't find her glasses one morning. We looked high and low. Sometimes, she falls asleep with them on watching tv, so we shook out the blankets, lifted her mattress, and looked under the bed. No signs of her glasses anywhere. I won't disgust you, though, with what things we did find!

But while looking for the glasses a second time without her, I did find the chip bag she had been eating from - after bed time I might add! And it was left open - as always. So I reached down in annoyance to close it - and saw something in there!

Sure enough, it was her glasses!

When I asked my daughter how the glasses ended up in a chip bag, she said she must have knocked the glasses from the night stand to the chip bag on the floor. Which makes sense, since she always knocking glasses and other stuff - like glasses of water - off her night stand with her tossing and turning.

Later though, my daughter and I began to wonder if we had a gremlin in the house. For we found a sharpie in a water bottle and my spare car key showed up in my shoe. So either my daughter is stranger than I thought and our house is haunted!

SCIENCE: Emotions Run Amok in Sleep-Deprived Brains

Picked this up from Yahoo. It's originally from Live Science. - OlderMusicGeek

Emotions Run Amok in Sleep-Deprived Brains
By Charles Q. Choi, Special to LiveScience

Without sleep, the emotional centers of our brains dramatically overreact to bad experiences, research now reveals.

"When we're sleep deprived, it's really as if the brain is reverting to more primitive behavior, regressing in terms of the control humans normally have over their emotions," researcher Matthew Walker, a neuroscientist at the University of California, Berkeley, told LiveScience.

Anyone who has ever gone without a good night's sleep is aware that doing so can make a person emotionally irrational. While past studies have revealed that sleep loss can impair the immune system and brain processes such as learning and memory, there has been surprisingly little research into why sleep deprivation affects emotions, Walker said.

Walker and his colleagues had 26 healthy volunteers either get normal sleep or get sleep deprived, making them stay awake for roughly 35 hours. On the following day, the researchers scanned brain activity in volunteers using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while they viewed 100 images. These started off as emotionally neutral, such as photos of spoons or baskets, but they became increasingly negative in tone over time—for instance, pictures of attacking sharks or vipers.

"While we predicted that the emotional centers of the brain would overreact after sleep deprivation, we didn't predict they'd overreact as much as they did," Walker said. "They became more than 60 percent more reactive to negative emotional stimuli. That's a whopping increase—the emotional parts of the brain just seem to run amok."

The researchers pinpointed this hyperactive response to a shutdown of the prefrontal lobe, a brain region that normally keeps emotions under control. This structure is relatively new in human evolution, "and so it may not yet have adapted ways to cope with certain biological extremes," Walker speculated. "Human beings are one of the few species that really deprive themselves of sleep. It's a real oddity in nature."

In modern life, people often deprive themselves of sleep "almost on a daily basis," Walker said. "Alarm bells should be ringing about that behavior—no pun intended."

Future research can focus on which components of sleep help restore emotional stability—"whether it's dreaming REM sleep or slow-wave, non-dreaming forms of sleep," Walker said.

Many psychiatric disorders, "particularly ones involving emotions, seem to be linked with abnormal sleep," he added. "Traditionally people mostly thought the psychiatric disorders were contributing to the sleep abnormalities, but of course it could be the other way around. If we can find out which parts of sleep are most key to emotional stability, we already have a good range of drugs that can push and pull at these kinds of sleep and maybe help treat certain kinds of psychiatric conditions."

The findings are detailed in the Oct. 23 issue of the journal Current Biology.

This might help explain road rage and the lack of manners and civility that people complain about.
