CULTURE/SOCIETY: The best big sister ever!

FOR HALLOWEEN MY 3 YEAR OLD HANDICAP BROTHER INSISTED TO BE BATMAN, AND I ROBIN. BECAUSE HE CAN'T WALK, AS HIS FAITHFUL SIDEKICK I RAN HIM AROUND SINGING "NANANANANANA, BATMAN" ALL NIGHT. HAPPIEST I'VE EVER SEEN HIM.

MY LIFE: 3 Halloween Questions

Well, I got thes questions for my work newsletter, so I thought I could put the answers here on my blog too! - OlderMusicGeek

1. What was your favorite Halloween costume as a child?

I can’t remember that far back, but I do remember one year dressing up as my childhood hero, Doc Savage, a kind of pseudo-Superman from 1930s pulp magazines. Of course, no one knew who he was, so no one knew who I was being!

Then one year, when a friend and I were passing out candy, we ran out. So we put on our clothes backwards, walked up to the doors backwards, stood with our backs to the people, told the answer to the joke, then the question, then said trick or treat!

My daughter was Queen Amidala from Star Wars for 3 years in a row. We offered to buy her a new costume, but no way!

2. What is your favorite scary movie?

“Alien” always has been and will be my favorite movie. Every time I watch it, I get chills and jump! Especially during the scene in the escape hatch!

But I also love Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho". Found out recently that I apparently let my daughter watch that movie at too young an age! She told me that she tied the bathroom door shut for a week when she took a shower after she saw it!

3. What is your favorite Halloween candy?

Peanut M&M’s all the way! Though I can't eat too many of them now with my high cholestrol!

But I loved Snickers too! Anything that mixes chocolate and peanuts!

Unfortunately, with the low-fat, low cholestrol diet I'm on now. Can't really eat too many of them!

CULTURE/SOCIETY: 7 Geekiest Geek Hobbies

I found this post from the Prodigeek blog when I was doing some googling. - OlderMusicGeek

7 geekiest geek hobbies

June 16th, 2008

Categories: Comic Books, Geek living, Movies, The 7, Video games

There are many factions within the geek community, most viciously opposing and plot the death of other factions. Just try to get a Star Trek fan to agree with a Star Wars fan on anything. The truth is there is a hierarchy of geeks, and geeks in higher parts of that hierarchy are well in their power to look down on those lower in the hierarchy, the same way jocks and cheerleaders look down on all geeks. This list ranks the geekiest of geek hobbies in, well, order of geekiness. Enjoy one of these doesn’t make you a bad person. Just really, really geeky.

7. Star Wars geek

When it comes to sci-fi geekdom, Star Wars wins. It’s just huge, with every comic book, novel, action figure, and video game to collect, memorize, and horde. No other single franchise can match this insanity.

How to know if you are one: You have read anything Star Wars related outside of the 6 movies

Wastes money on: Anything Star Wars related outside of the 6 movies

6. Anime

Pokemon has helped turn anime into a less embarrassing hobby, as long as you are younger than 12. Once you his puberty, it’s time to hide those big-eyed cartoons and start watching South Park. But some geeks can’t break the habit. They just love the speed lines.

How to know if you are one: You understand anime

Wastes money on: Subtitle software and Japanese lessons

5. Comic book geek

These geeks are encyclopedias of the decades old Marvel and DC Universes, memorizing first appearances, continuity blips, even who’s dating who (in super hero land). They also know how many destructive acids exist on the human hand and thus often walk around with Purel and latex gloves for safe comic book reading. No glove, no love…of comics.

How to know if you are one: You know the difference between Superman Earth-1, Earth-2, and Earth-3 and can list every difference in their costumes. (Oh god, I do know the difference between Earth-1, Earth-2 and Earth-3! - OMGeek)

Wastes money on: CGC Grading, professional grading of comic book

4. Action figure geek

The challenge with action figure geeks is deciding who is geekier - the one who keeps the figures boxed or the one who opens them up and plays with them. Then I realized both are immature and not worth telling a date. And yes, I open my action figures (they’re desk distractions).

How to know if you are one: You know what points of articulation are and often count how many you have

Wastes money on: CGC Grading, professional grading of action figures

3. Tabletop gaming geek

Video games might be reaching the mainstream, but tabletop gaming is regulated to the back of comic book shops, hidden from the street traffic and common folk. All the newfangled technology and graphics pale in comparison to a true Dungeon Master’s imagination and extensive free time.

How to know if you are one: You have a preference between Dungeons and Dragons 2nd edition and 3.5

Wastes money on: Wizard hat for effect

2. Cosplay geek

Often seen at various conventions, cosplay geeks dress up like characters from their favorite fiction piece. Cosplay is very recognizable among anime and Star Wars conventions, where people come decked out in homemade costumes. Don’t you dare show up in anything store bought.

How to know if you are one: You have won a costume to any event that didn’t have costume party or Halloween in the title

Wastes money on: Paper mache. Lot and lots of paper mache.

1. LARP geek

LARP, or Live action role-playing, combines 2 and 3 into an incredibly geeky offspring where people dress up as their role-playing fantasy and play often Dungeons and Dragons or other tabletop style games. It’s kind of like military reenactments where you don’t know the ending.

How to know if you are one: You have ever played LARP. Once is enough.

Wastes money on: Time period specific shoes, for medieval or futuristic settings

(You will note - Music Geek is NOT listed among these! - OMGeek)

ENTERTAINMENT: Batman Goes Shopping

Maybe it's just me, but I found this really amusing. - OlderMusicGeek

Some comments from Youtube by the guy who made it, Griffith84, and people who watched it.

I made this video as a going away present for my buddy to college. Hope you enjoy. Also check out my myspace for pics of my costumes. www.myspace.com/funnyguyderek

that costume is professional as hell...can i ask how and where you got it?
Griffith84
(Reply)
I made the costume. I got everything I needed from eBay and around the internet.
wow...excellent work...i tried to make my own too, but it just doesn't look as good...did it cost a lot for all the pieces?
Griffith84
(Reply)
It cost me just over $1,400 to make. If any of you are looking on getting a costume like this, you're looking at spending $1,500 to $2,000

SO what did the check-out lady say to you?
Griffith84
(Reply)
All she said was total under $25 dollars don't need a signature. I said thanks in my awesome batman voice.
(Reply)
This was really funny and I really LOL'ED. But it was too few people in the store to make any point of it, why bother when there is no one but the cashier? And she didn't even smile a bit... odd.
Griffith84
(Reply)
She didn't smile cause she was pissed at the look of me lol.

Man, I've never seen a guy buy toilet paper with such intensity, lol

Why did no security guy try to stop you?

I tried to do this yesterday for a project in my Sociology class. I didn't get more than 10 feet in the store before security turned me around and told me I could only come in if I take the mask off.

My boys are watching this and LOVE it. Batman you rock! Although...if I saw Batman in my grocery store I would assume he was a terrorist. Or I'd offer to pay for his milk and TP. Because that's just the kind of person I am! A real superhero shouldn't have to pay for anything! :)

xlizlennonx
(Reply)
"Uhm. Yeah, Linda? If Batman comes in today...just act normal."

DH2020
(Reply)
alright here is my list for today:
1) Have a dinner date with a news reporter
2) Go to the store and buy some TP and juice
3) Find Joker's hideout and flush him out.

Hey i have a question for you. At 1:28 you gave the finger. Was it at the people that were following you or did someone say " hey dumbass" or something like that to you? Also very funny, cant wait for spiderman.
Griffith84
(Reply)
LOL I'm glad you asked. The people behind me told me to slow down...aaaaaa sorry but Batman only has one speed if you can't keep up he'll leave you in the shadows.

bortec9
(Reply)
milk & paper towels? guess hes going to see catwoman.
nice vid!!

He jacks some apples at the start, and you notice he never pays for them at checkout LOL.
ADevilsReject6
(Reply)
He totally stole! That's not what Batman would do!
Griffith84
(Reply)
No, I didn't do that. I did not steal. Look closer. I grabbed one apple, looked at it, then tossed it back. I have no pockets. Where would I put an apple?

Jimmyclown
(Reply)
LOL Batdude in the Grocery store! Batman is Awesome! Batman only goes shopping as Bruce Wayne because Batman is too awesome! Cool costume, even the design of the Cape and mask! But how did people react afterward?
Griffith84
(Reply)
Thanks I'm glad you all like it. After I got out of the store a lot of people in the parking lot yelled out. "Batman, look its batman!" On Halloween night, me and my buddy and his girlfriend went to a Domino's and picked up some pizza. A cop showed up to get something. I said "How's it going?" in my Batvoice. Then when we left, I said "Take care." It was so funny. You can tell the cop was trying real hard to keep a straight face but he never laughed.

Another amusing Batman video.

CULTURE/SOCIETY: The Best or Favorite Part of Halloween?

This is OlderMusicGeek - or Beautiful Nightmare if you prefer :). But this is NOT a reprinted article. It is me writing, though using reprinted stuff. :) Confused? You won't be, after this blog of...OlderMusicGeek's - or Beautiful Nightmare's? - Stupid Stuff.

WARNING: This blog is DEFINITELY PG-13!

We have a weekly supplement that our newspaper puts out to compete with the weekly alternative paper - which it really doesn't compete since a lot people pick up both!

Anyway, the weekly supplement asked their staff what was the best part of Halloween - and some gave some amusing answers.
- Tooth decay.
- Zombies. Or chocolate. Maybe both.
- Scaring the crap out of people as they walk up for candy.
- Hiring dwarves in costumes to harvest candy for me.
- Masks. No one knows it was you who puked on that car.
- Lacing Hershey's Miniatures with arsenic.

So I decided to google "favorite part of Halloween" on the internet to see what would come up. Yes, the paper "the best part of Halloween", but I remembered it wrong and used "favorite part", all right? Fine, I'll google "best part" too! Sheesh!

Anyway, these are the most entertaining things that came up - at least in my opinion! Well, that is until I got bored.

Clara, last night: “Daddy, do you know what the best part of Halloween is?”
“No, Clara, what’s that?"
“The part where the candy goes into your bucket.”
She confirmed that she likes that part even better than the part where you actually eat the candy. I have to say I agree.

You know what the best part of halloween is that you can be someone or something your not. I mean how many times did your parents tell you to be yourself...

What’s your favorite part of Halloween? The crisp air, and enjoying my children (my husband eats all of the candy).

But my favorite part of Halloween is decorating the house with my Norman Rockwell Halloween Plates collection
from the Shamilton Mint. All the old favorites are there, looking just as they did on the covers of Saturday Evening Post years ago...

My favorite part of Halloween when I was a kid was when my mother would tie donuts from a string and then blindfold us.
Obviously the trick was to try and find the donut and eat it. Sort of "Bobbing for Apples" meets "Pin the Tail on the Donkey".

When I was a kid, my favorite part of Halloween happened after the trick-or-treating. It was fun to don a costume and run through the neighborhood in packs, ringing doorbells, collecting treats, and occasionally playing a prank when nobody answered our ring and the lights were out. But the best part was at the end, when my brother and I got home, tore off our costumes, and dumped our huge cache of candy on the living room floor, his candy on one side and mine on the other of a Maginot line running from the television to the kitchen door. It was the climax of the evening, for now it was time to sort and organize the candy. I spent hours on this. Every year I developed elaborate systems. I would organize by size, shape, brand, and quality. I had a chocolate gradient.

I don't know about you, but in the years before beer pong, the mounds of free candy were the best part of Halloween.

My favorite part of Halloween is not the candy corn, nor the pumpkin carving, nor even the gathering of friends to celebrate such a special holiday. Rather, let us consider the Non-Trads - that autonomous group of students that always sit on the perimeters of classrooms and only speak up when the topics of politics, children, or sex arise. For some reason these creatures, while remaining dormant for most of the semester, choose Halloween to express what they've been holding back all this time.

Wigs are, quite frankly, my favorite part of Halloween. I first indulged in my effort to be a redhead when I went as Magenta from Rocky Horror Picture Showin high school, and subsequently made all the guests at my party that year participate in the Time Warp.

My favorite part of Halloween was dressing up with boyfriend Roy as adults for parties and dances.

My favorite part of Halloween isn’t that it’s the one time a year I allow myself to eat SweetTarts, or looking on MySpace on Nov. 1 to see everyone has changed their profile picture to them having what we are to believe is the best drunken time ever in their Sexy Judge or Slutty Cupcake costume. No, it’s seeing all the pictures of small dogs dressed up in humiliating costumes that their crazy owners post on the internet!

The best part of Halloween parties, in Dan's opinion at least, was the acceptability of indiscriminate flirting that would be gauche under normal circumstances.

The best part of Halloween for me is seeing all of the dead people.

He said the best part of Halloween Haunt is "a victim curled in the fetal position on the ground with me lording over them."

What's the best part of Halloween? When all the trick-or-treaters have finally gone home and I can drink alone, in peace.

Without a doubt, the best part of Halloween is the costume. A shocking number of females use Halloween as an excuse to wear as little as humanly possible while still covering up certain body parts. I'm not complaining, I'm just observing. An equally shocking number of males each year are compelled to wear tight and skimpy women's clothing while still covering up certain body parts. I am complaining.

But honestly, haven't we lost sight of the best part of Halloween? By that I mean:Okay, back to slutty.

OH! I almost forgot to mention the best part of Halloween. Girls use it as an excuse to wear the sluttiest outfit they can put together which is usually very little clothing at all...and thats always a good thing...unless they are like 300 pounds with a beard...then its just not right.

Skanky costumes are the best part of Halloween. The skankier the better.

The best part of halloween is how regular chicks get to dress up (and often act as) hookers. I'm not sure how or why and I don't really care. Clean girls acting like dirty girls is AOK with me.

I love Halloween. The leaves are falling, a chill is in the air, and you can smell the wood burning in fireplaces all over the neighborhood. Wonderful!. But the best part of Halloween is lighting a match to that bag full of dog(
poop) on Mr. Goldbaum's front porch and ringing the doorbell.
