CULTURE/SOCIETY - Mother shuns Disney Princess ideal and dressesdaughter up as five REAL heroines from history to commemorate fifthbirthday

By MARGOT PEPPERS

A photographer has commemorated her daughter's fifth birthday by dressing her up as five different influential women from history - Amelia Earhart, Coco Chanel, Susan B Anthony, Helen Keller and Jane Goodall - and capturing the images for a photo series.
Jaime Moore from Austin, Texas, wrote on her website JaimeMoorePhotography.com that instead of dressing Emma up as a Disney princess - which is 'an unrealistic fantasy for most girls' - she decided to take photos of her emulating real women worth admiring.

'My daughter wasn't born into royalty,' the mother-of-two explained. 'But she was born into a country where she can now vote, become a doctor, a pilot, an astronaut, or even President if she wants and that's what REALLY matters.'

The mother-of-two said she chose five women since it corresponds to her daughter's age, but that 'there are thousands of unbelievable women (and girls) who have beat the odds and fought (and still fight) for their equal rights all over the world.'

CULTURE/SOCIETY and HUMOR: A Developing Story

Someone on Twitter - I don't remember who - led me to this story on the Minnesota site, MNspeak. Being a lover of puns, I had to reprint it! - OlderMusicGeek

We have a bra thief: Theft. About 40-60 bras were taken from Victoria's Secret, 3001 White Bear Av. The bras were in a drawer near the entrance.

Here what the link says - it's from Miscreant Roundup on buzz.mn. - OMGeek

Meanwhile
, in Maplewood:

“Theft. About 40-60 bras were taken from Victoria's Secret, 3001 White Bear Av. The bras were in a drawer near the entrance.”

I think we have a perv at work, or the return of Sh’blynnagoroth, the horrible 100-breasted she-beast who has slumbered since time began, waiting for the return of the old one. Just because she is the embodiment of implacable evil whose very name causes men to go mad doesn’t mean she doesn’t appreciate something that provides support and comfort.

But here are some of the punny comments from MNspeak - OMGeek

What kind of a boob would do a thing like this?

I hope they catch them and knock-er them around.

SPIRITUALITY/RELIGION: Ghost Quizzes

Will you turn into a ghost when you die?
Or will you race up to heaven? Down to you-know-where? Or will you be gone forever?

This is a hard one, you will either disappear or go right up to heaven. Your goodness shines through, but people who do not believe may not deserve anything. Most certainly you WILL fly up, UP; UP! But be aware, I am NOT sure!
31.95 % of 3246 Quiz participants had this profile!

What type of ghost are you?

You don't even know that you're a ghost. And you were probably a dork when you were alive.
Take this quiz

What type of ghost are you? (Another quiz with the same name)
Your Result
You're a fraidy ghost. You're scared of everything. You're probably scared of this quiz.

Which ghost of the 13 are you?
The Pilgrimess

The Salem Witch Trials was a sad time..you were one of the many girls that were accused of witch craft. The girl from school, who was jealous of you, told the teacher and you were immediately sent to court. No one listened to you speak of her jealousy. No one cared. No tolerance was slapped on you. You were killed the next day, with a mean look on your face. You're now a angry ghost that haunts the town of Salem everyday. You are The Pilgrimess.

What type of ghost are you? (A third quiz with the same name)

Your Result
You are a noisy ghost, you are always screaming and trying to haunt people.

CULTURE/SOCIETY and SCIENCE/TECHNOLOGY: Oh Baby That Prius Turns Me On Sooooo Much

The Science Friday Blog: New Teen Idol: Hybrid Cars
posted by Ira Flatow on Thursday, May 22 2008

My teenage daughter blew me away last week. She told me that the car that she drives to school has become the "must ride" car in the parking lot, the sexiest, hottest car in the school. The car kids all wanted to jump into.

What was that car? Some souped up, high torque convertible? Nope. It was our three year old Prius hybrid. The car that gets 40 miles per gallon.

As I say, I couldn't believe it. Wow. "Are you kidding your old dad?" "Nope. We drive the hottest car."

If there was any sign of a genuine paradigm shift, it must be this one. Teens and their cars are legendary indicators of national trends and moods. And if the depth of the growing energy crisis is reaching down to the teen/car level, the problem must be even more serious than we thought. Or, we are not giving our kids enough credit for being savvy consumers, who are ahead of us on the energy curve.

I choose to believe it is the latter. It's a ray of hope in this energy morass.

EcoGeek: EcoGeeks get all the girls
By Hank Green

Just in case you needed another reason to care about the environment: It turns out girls dig guys who dig environmental technology.

According to a study conducted by GM as part of this year's Challenge X competition:

  • Eighty percent of American car buyers would find someone with the latest fuel-efficient car more interesting to talk to at a party than someone with the latest sports car.
  • More than 4 out of 10 (45 percent) 18- to 43-year-olds say it's a fashion faux pas nowadays to have a car that's not green or environmentally friendly.

Little did we know we've been fashionable all along! (OK, maybe not me - I'm still tooling around in my old Sentra.) No one seems to have told 80 percent of America that it's actually greener to keep driving your current car than to invest in buying a new one.

Nonetheless, this study is good news. And when I buy my first new car (never!), I'll be sure to let everyone know how green it is.

GM's Challenge X is a yearly competition among college students to make GM vehicles more efficient. This year's competition had students from 17 universities "re-engineering" Chevy's Equinox to make it more efficient and reduce its greenhouse impact, while retaining consumer appeal.

Solutions the students put together included using alternative propulsion systems like fuel cells and hybrid technologies, and using alternative fuels like biodiesel and ethanol.

This year's winners are from Mississippi State. They increased the fuel economy of the Equinox by almost 40 percent with a hybrid-electric biodiesel engine.

That's hot.

02/26/08 Update: Wow. What was expected to be a short movie that would circulate within a small circle of friends has turned into something much more very quickly. I'm thrilled that so many people have enjoyed this video but also somewhat mortified that I added this without my daughter's knowledge or consent. Maybe someday she will find some humor in it.

To those who have sent positive comments, thank you very much. You've made us appreciate what we have even more than we already do. To those of you who've said you've changed your mind about having children, well, have at it. :)

She has never seen Pokemon so I don't think she's making a reference to the ball on that show. I think she just means pokey ball as in "a ball that is pokey."

Some comments from YouTube. You actually probably don't want to read all the comments on YouTube, because they have a big, long fight in there about whether the 3 year old was reading from cue cards or being coached what to say. All I can say is those people OBVIOUSLY never had any kids! - OlderMusicGeek

I don't get the appeal... her analysis lacked depth, historical insight, and comparative gravity. A more detailed look into the socio-mythic implications of the "shiny guy" motif may have instituted said heart-melting, but as is, a resounding naught.

Kid, I've flown from one side of this galaxy to the other. I've seen a lot of strange stuff, but I've never seen anything to make me believe there's one all-powerful Force controlling everything. There's no mystical energy field that controls my destiny. It's all a lot of simple tricks and nonsense.
