MY LIFE - 50 For My 50th Day 28: "Could You Be Loved" by Bob Marley and "Isn't It Glorious" by Lipstick Homicide with songs about being done with depression

One of the first things that one needs to do to get out of depression, and probably for other mental illnesses too, is to love yourself again.

Nobody's perfect. We all make mistakes. We all do things that we wish we hadn't.

But long as you're trying to make the world a better place than you found, you're not trying to be a jerk or an asshole, you try to treat everybody with some kindness and dignity, well, then, you're an okay person and worthy of love.

MY LIFE - 50 For My 50th Day 27: "Sleepwalkin'" by The Violent Femmes and other coming-out-of-depression songs

For an explanation of "50 For My 50th", go here - http://oldermusicgeek.blogspot.com/2013/08/entertainment-50-for-my-50th-50-days-of.html

Well, eventually I pulled myself out of my depression and came to terms to my other psychological.

There was no magic spell or sudden event that changed me. I wasn't in a sappy movie. Can't even say the love of a good woman cured me, since this was before I met my wonderful wife.

No, what did it was years of therapy, the right medication, and me working through my problems. Little by little, with years of long and hard work.

It wasn't fun, but it was worth it. Made me a better person. Rather have not gone through it, but didn't have much of a choice in the matter.

MY LIFE - 50 For My 50th Day 26: "Something You Ain't Got" by Cracker and other coming out of depression tunes

For an explanation of "50 For My 50th", go here - http://oldermusicgeek.blogspot.com/2013/08/entertainment-50-for-my-50th-50-days-of.html

Well, depression, like so many things, can only go on for so long, before you hit rock bottom and realize you need to do something about it.

For me, it was when I was almost evicted out of my apartment because it had become such a mess and disaster zone.

That's when I got on anti-depression and made sure to stay in therapy.

It was a slow recovery, but it was a recovery.

MY LIFE - 50 For My 50th Day 25: "Violet" by Hole and other angry depression songs

Didn't realize I put so many songs about my depression on here. But I guess it and the divorce were the biggest and most traumatic part of my life.

Well, don't worry. We get into the recovery after this!

But one part they don't talk much about in depression is the anger. You do feel sad and lethargic. But there's also anger. Anger from the frustration of being stuck.

So these songs cover that aspect of depression.

MY LIFE - 50 For My 50th Day 24: "From The Air" by Laurie Anderson and "Hitting The Ground" by Gordon Gano and other songs about how I felt when I was depresse

For an explanation of "50 For My 50th", go here - http://oldermusicgeek.blogspot.com/2013/08/entertainment-50-for-my-50th-50-days-of.html

When I was suffering from depression, I just felt weighed down, like it was impossible and too much effort to do anything,

Life didn't seem to have much point, and spent most of my time lying on the couch sleeping or watching tv.

The apartment went to hell and we almost got evicted.

These songs capture how I was feeling at that time.

Depression runs in my family. And it hit me hard. These songs pretty much describe how I felt when I was deep in depression.

MY LIFE - 50 For My 50th Day 22: "The Real Me" by The Who and other songs about my mental illness

For an explanation of "50 For My 50th", go here - http://oldermusicgeek.blogspot.com/2013/08/entertainment-50-for-my-50th-50-days-of.html

One of the best pieces of advice that I ever got was divorce is not a cure-all. All of your problems are not solved by a divorce.

And although it did save me from my ex-wife, by escaping her, I was able to let out other demons that I had kept down and had not dealt with.

And there were a number of them: depression, crossdressing and transgenderism, addictive behavior.

MY LIFE - 50 For My 50th Day 18: "When It's Cold" and "Into The Blue" by Moby and other songs that describe how I felt suicidal

For an explanation of "50 For My 50th", go here - http://oldermusicgeek.blogspot.com/2013/08/entertainment-50-for-my-50th-50-days-of.html

I'm not proud of this fact, but I did try to kill myself once. And it wasn't a cry for help. No note. Went where it was hard to find me. The only reason I'm still alive is because I didn't take enough pills or vomited up too much of them.

Why did I try to kill myself? Even a decade later, it's to explain completely.

I mean, I obviously wasn't thinking straight.

But basically, it boiled down to this.

I was took pride in being a good husband and a good dad. And I failed on that when I cheated on my wife.

Secondly, my wife was threatening to go back to Africa with our daughter. I was transgender and Africa is very traditional. I knew I could have trouble getting custody and visitation rights there.

And thirdly, my wife outed my transgenderism to my family and friends.

So, in my crazed, depressed state of mind, I didn't see much reason to live. I failed as a father and husband. I was losing my wife. Thought I might never see my daughter again.

I was an idiot. More than a decade later, I'm happily divorced from that awful woman. I have custody of my daughter. And my daughter and I only get a few texts from her mother every few months. And I, with the help of a great therapist, decided my transgenderism was just something I went through to cope, deal, and come to terms with my feminine side.

Morale of the story: Suicide bad! Don't do it!

MY LIFE - 50 For My 50th Day 17: "Take Me To The River" by Talking Heads and other tunes about my marriage falling apart.

For an explanation of "50 For My 50th", go here - http://oldermusicgeek.blogspot.com/2013/08/entertainment-50-for-my-50th-50-days-of.html

Well, I stated before, I entered into a marriage that I should have never should have entered.

And it reached a head when my wife went to visit her African home for six months.

I ended up exploring my transgender issues and cheated on my wife.

She wasn't pleased when she found out.

SCIENCE, CULTURE/SOCIETY and SPIRITUALITY/RELIGION: Suicide: Holidays' Darkest Myth

This is an article from The L.A. Times that I found with Netvibes.com. I shortened to make it read more quickly. Here's a link to the complete article. - OlderMusicGeek

Suicide: holidays' darkest myth

Contrary to past reports, depression and suicide rates actually fall during the holidays.
By Susan Brink (susan.brink@latimes.com), Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
December 17, 2007
It was Christmas Eve when George Bailey stared into the black depths of the river beneath the bridge in Bedford Falls, convinced that the world would be better off without him. That scene from the 1946 movie classic "It's a Wonderful Life" could well have given birth to the media myth that Christmas is a trigger for increased suicides and episodes of depression.

It is a baseless notion, according to a body of published studies by statisticians who have examined hundreds of thousands of suicides in the United States and around the world. The number of suicides goes down, not up, over the holiday season, by as much as 40%.

In one of the most thorough examinations of what researchers call acts of deliberate self-harm, which can be an indication of depression, Helen Bergen, research scientist at the University of Oxford, found that Christmas, for most people, is protective.

Bergen and colleagues reached this conclusion after examining emergency room admission records of 19,346 people in England and looking at daily rates of self-induced injury from 1976 to 2003.

Drug or alcohol overdoses, self-poisoning with gas or other harmful substances and self-inflicted injuries-- with or without the deliberate intention to die -- all decreased from average levels during the week of Dec. 19-26, Bergen and colleagues found, and these lowered levels held through New Year's Day.

The decrease in rates of self-inflicted damage before, on and immediately after Christmas and into the New Year was found regardless of age, family connections or social isolation, the researchers reported in the September issue of the journal Social Science & Medicine.

Even people with family relationship problems were less inclined to attempt to hurt themselves during the holidays. "These findings are contrary to the popular view that Christmas is a time of stress and arguments," Bergen says. Perhaps, she says, problems within the nuclear family ease up instead of intensify when the extended family is around.

Another possible reason why depression and suicide rates fall this time of year is that the season, more than other times, is one of giving. "People tend to reach out over the holidays," says Dr. Douglas Jacobs, a psychiatrist at Harvard Medical School. Elderly people in nursing homes might suddenly get visitors. People who haven't heard from friends all year might get a card or a phone call.

It's only in the last year that the majority of news stories reflected the fact versus the myth about seasonal suicide rates, says Romer, who since 2000 has been tracking trends in media interpretations of the link between holidays and suicide. In a national search of news stories linking the holidays with suicide, he says, 9% of news organizations supported the myth in 2006, compared with 57% in 2005 and 77% in 1999.

An extra dose of caring probably adds to the psychological protection of a season that seems to insist on happiness. No matter how bad it may seem, holiday rituals add up to more good than bad, buffering adults and children against depression and anxiety.

Barbara Fiese, chairwoman of psychology at Syracuse University, reviewed 32 studies done over 50 years and concluded that holiday family rituals may be annoying, but they're good for us. People with strong family routines and rituals at holiday time reported more marital satisfaction, better academic achievement among children and better overall health among family members, she found. Even in families in which there has been a divorce, the continuation of family rituals improves the children's ability to adapt and increases their stability.
