I admit it. This blog is NOT consistent. What it is keeps changing. Right now, it's pretty much a place where I keep photos, videos, and links to websites that interest me. Before that, I wrote a few blogs myself and still do once in a blue moon. But most of the stuff before the links are just reprints of articles I found interesting. CULTURE/SOCIETY: Thirty is the New Black?
Tuesday, October 9, 2007
thirty is the new black
When I arrived at work today, I saw that signs had been posted around the building notifying everyone that today was the birthday of H., one of our HR girls. There was a big, colorful "Happy Birthday" banner outside of her office and smaller signs had been taped to various walls and doors saying "H. is 30 today!" These smaller signs also had some sort of clip art on them, but it wasn't until I got closer I noticed it was a picture of the grim reaper with the words OVER THE HILL!Ah, how I remember those days when I had aunts and uncles making a big deal about turning 50. Then there was the year my dad turned 40 and everybody at his office wore black armbands and passed out black roses to all the employees. But 30? Is this really the new scary age? Most people don't even figure out who the (intercourse) they are until their mid-twenties, and that's if they are incredibly fortunate, which doesn't leave much time to win the Triple Crown before being put out to pasture (Yeah. I know. But I've spent the past year living in two of the biggest horse cities around. So sue me.)
What does this mean for my relationship, where one of us is over the hill and one of us is still climbing it? (And, just by looking at our blogs, I'm fairly certain it's pretty obvious which one of us is still in the prime of her life, given that I have the fun, pink, perky layout. Oh. Wait....). A six-year age difference doesn't seem like much, but when looked at from this perspective, why, it's practically a may-december romance.
I'll be 27 when I graduate with my master's degree, so I suppose it's best to know this sort of information sooner rather than later. Though it's a little daunting to think that as soon as I get a job I'm going to have to start planning my retirement from it. I guess it's just a good thing I was smart enough to spend my twenties going to school for careers that guarantee lots and lots of money.
Like I wrote earlier, I found this amusing - being in my 40s and all.
I just find it strange - as science extends our life span, we expect people - and even children! - at a younger and younger age to know and plan their whole life out. Who knows what they really want out of life as teens or even in their twenties? And the way technology is changing everything, one might just have to throw out all their plans anyway!
And I remember when 50 was over the hill and surprised to find a 40-year-old co-worker getting all those over the hill signs. And was wondering if she's over the hill, then what's that mean for me.
But as I thought about it. Most of us won't live over 80, so 40 is definitely the mid-point - if not passed the mid-point - of our lives.
I'll admit that it kind of scared me - thinking that I already finished over half my life. But it made me think and realize some things too. But to face things than to run away from them.
So I'm working on my retirement more. Trying to save up for my daughter's college - which starts in less than a decade. And thinking about what I want out of my life. Thinking about maybe after my daughter finishes college, it will be time for me to go back. :)
Getting older brings new perspective, whether it's turning 30, 40, or 50 or whatever. So I guess in the end, all I can say is - I think facing it is better than hiding.

HUMOR and CULTURE/SOCIETY: Jokes on Getting Older
When I went to lunch today, I noticed an old lady sitting on a park bench sobbing her eyes out. I stopped and asked her what was wrong.
She said, "I have a 22 year old husband at home. He makes love to me every morning and then gets up and makes me pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit and freshly ground coffee."
I said, "Well, then why are you crying?" She said, "He makes me homemade soup for lunch and my favorite brownies and then makes love to me for half the afternoon.”
I said, "Well, why are you crying?" She said, "For dinner he makes me a gourmet meal with wine and my favorite dessert and then makes love to me until 2:00 a.m."
I said, "Well, why in the world would you be crying?"
She said, "I can't remember where I live!"
Two elderly ladies had been friends for many decades. Over the years, they had shared all kinds of activities and adventures. Lately, their activities had been limited to meeting a few times a week to play cards.
One day they were laying cards when one looked at the other and said, "Now don't get mad at me....I know we've been friends for a long time.....but I just can't think of your name! I've thought and thought, but I can't remember it. Please tell me what your name is."
Her friend glared at her. For at least three minutes she just stared and glared at her.
Finally she said, "How soon do you need to know?"
Now, I think you're supposed to send this to 5 or 6, maybe 10. Oh heck, send it to a bunch of your friends if you can remember who they are. Then something is supposed to happen . . . . I think.

CULTURE/SOCIETY: Tired Tonight
Tired tonight...
Tired of this.
Tired of that.
Tired of the clutter.
Tired of yard work.
Tired of Home Depot projects that need to be done at my house.
Tired of not knowing how to do Home Depot projects.
Tired of not wanting to learn.
Tired of people promising and not delivering.
Tired of people who relive the past and no, you can't go home again.
Tired of being interested when it only lasts for a glimpse.
Tired of yelling and screaming.
Tired of not sleeping. Or not sleeping well.
Tired of staying up for nothing.
Tired of waitng for repsonses from people who will never answer.
Tired of the old way things used to be.
Tired of hot summers and patterns that seemingly never end.
Tired of being alone.
Tired of being around people.
Tired of the way that people complain about life and do nothing to fix it.
Tired of you.
Tired of me.
Tired of people who mean well but will never change.
Tired of people carbon copying the greatest thing they saw or heard yesterday.
Tired of the bags under my eyes.
Tired of being lulled into a great conversation with no follow up.
Tired of being jaded.
Tired of being eternally at the wrong time and place.
Tired of wrong times and places.
Tired of waiting for tomorrow and something better.
Tired of waiting for "the next thing".
Tired of chasing after people who stopped talking for no reason known to me.
I'm tired of being tired. posted by Brenda @ 11:00 PM

HUMOR and CULTURE/SOCIETY: Never on a Hallmark Card
My tire was thumping.
I thought it was flat
When I looked at the tire...
I noticed your cat.
Sorry!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Heard your wife left you,
How upset you must be.
But don't fret about it...
She moved in with me.
that we've been together,
I can't help but wonder...
"What the hell was I thinking?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Congratulations on your wedding day!
Too bad no one likes your husband.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How could two people as beautiful as you
Have such an ugly baby?
someone to hold,
someone to love.
After having met you ..
I've changed my mind.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I must admit, you brought Religion into my life.
I never believed in Hell until I met you.
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
As the days go by, I think of how lucky I am...
That you're not here to ruin it for me.
####################################################
Before you go...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Happy birthday! You look great for your age.
Almost Lifelike!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When we were together,
you always said you'd die for me.
Now that we've broken up,
I think it's time you kept your promise.
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
We have been friends for a very long time ..
let's say we stop?
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I 'm so miserable without you
it's almost like you're here.
=====================================================
Congratulations on your new bundle of joy.
Did you ever find out who the father was?
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Your friends and I wanted to do
something special for your birthday.
So we're having you put to sleep.
))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
So your daughter's a hooker,
and it spoiled your day.
Look at the bright side,
it's really good pay.
HUMOR and CULTURE/SOCIETY: Signs You're Getting Older
Your houseplants are alive and you can't smoke any of them.
You keep more food than beer in the fridge.
6:00 a.m. is when you get up, not when you go to bed.
"I just can't drink the way I used to" replaces "I'm never going to drink that much again."
You hear your favorite song in an elevator.
You watch the Weather Channel.
Your friends marry and divorce instead of "hook up" and "break up".
Jeans and a sweater no longer qualify as "dressed up".
You go from 130 days of vacation time to 14.
You're the one calling the police because those dang kids next door won't turn down the stereo.
You don't know what time Taco Bell closes anymore.
Your car insurance goes down and your car payments go up.
You feed your dog Science Diet instead of McDonald's leftovers.
Sleeping on the couch makes your back hurt.
You take naps from noon to 6 p.m.
Dinner and a movie is the whole date instead of the beginning of one.
A $4.00 bottle of wine is no longer "pretty good stuff."
You actually eat breakfast food at breakfast time.
90% of the time you spend in front of a computer is for real work.
You drink at home to save money before going to a bar.
Eating a basket of chicken wings at 3 am would severely upset, rather than settle, your stomach.
You read this entire list looking desperately for one sign that doesn't apply to you and can't find one to save your soul.
