CULTURE/SOCIETY: Why I Haven't Written For So Long And Why Zuhn Thinks Other Bloggers Write

Okay, I know it's been over a month! What can i say? I'm sure my four regular readers are suffering from severe withdraw!

*I stare into the auditorium and wave at The Computer/Music Nerd, Tudor Rose, The "Jamaican" and some guy from Ireland.*

I could give lots of excuses - for instance.. I just went off a medication that I had been taking for 6 months and one of the withdraw symptoms was insomnia, so I was too dead tired to sleep. And my computer is acting up, making my internet connection re-e-e-e-e-eal slow sometimes. Also, I had been working lots of extra hours. Plus, it's finally warm and I got spring fever! - If my slowing down of postings from the blogs I read is any indication, it seems a lot of people have something better to do than sit in front of a computer, now that it is FINALLY warm again!

I could say those things, but I won't!

I am going to try to get back to the grindstone again. I make no promises though. It depends, in part, how my sleep goes - and how busy I am this summer!

But I have started Twitter, so you can keep up with me there. Though I'll probably add my "tweets" here anyway.

In fact, here's my first one - well, i'm finally starting twitter after a couple of years. i broke down because i wanted to respond to my friend's tweets! from web

Funny thing is - I'm having trouble figuring out how to respond to people's tweets!

But in the meantime, here's an old piece by one of the bloggers I read regularly, Zuhn...

oh boy!
Posted on Monday 4 April 2005

Well, in full procrastination mode, I have been scanning through some random blogs. I have discovered three trends. One, blogs written by funny, insightful people usually in the freelance writing/editing business. Two, blogs written by religious freaks out to spread their love for Jesus just in case God got bored and decided to google “God” and happened onto their inane-youth-league touting blog and then God said “Well, obviously a devoted soul, let me put his name down on the guest list to heaven”. And three, blogs written by boring people who tell us about their boring little lives like someone will actually read it, all the while dreaming of their immanent popularity. I think I’m quickly falling into that third category. I hope not.

CULTURE/SOCIETY: Even Mother Nature Got in on the Act

This is from me, not reprinted from somewhere else. - OlderMusicGeek.

Well, it was April Fool's Day, so every one was a comedian.

Including, it turns out, Mother freakin' Nature!

Went outside a little early, just in case I had to scrape off my car windows - even though, it's already April 1st! We've been in a long cold spell here in the midwest!

But I guess covering our car windows with frost wasn't enough for Ma Nature on April 1st. No, she had to add freakin' snow!

Snow! In April! What's freakin' next? Another April snowstorm?! (Picture of snow in my hometown this morning was stolen from the State 29 blog.)

And I'm not pulling a prank here. A snowstorm really did once hit my home state in April!

After today's heavy snowfall, you might be wondering how this compares to history. April 8-10, 1973 might come to mind, the Blizzard of '73. During that snowstorm, Cedar Rapids received 14.5" according to the Iowa State Climatologist, Harry Hillaker.
Iowa City: April 8-10, 1973 - 14.3"
Dubuque: Apr. 8-10, 1973 - 19.2"

Record Snowfall Blankets Iowa City Area
By M. JOANNE B BUEGGER Of the Press Citizen
The severe storm that immobilized most of Iowa had dumped 10 inches of snow on Iowa City by noon today, bringing its share of emergencies, accidents and outages, but no serious injuries were reported. The record-breaking snowfall resulted in numerous highway accidents, including a Greyhound bus bound from Omaha to Chicago...

From Cases.com...
Showing my age, but I remember walking over the tops of people's houses. I was in high school in Iowa. April 9, 1973 - a severe late season snowstorm was in progress across Iowa, southeastern Minnesota, northern Illinois, and southern Wisconsin. Wind gusts to 70 mph whipped the snow into 16 foot drifts in Iowa. 10 to 20 inches of snow was common with 20 inches falling at Grand Meadow, Minnesota and 19.4 inches piling up at Dubuque, Iowa.

I know The Rocky Mountain folks and the Canucks are thinking I'm a wimp, cus I'm sure they take April snow and snowstorms in stride.

But this is exactly why I'll never move to The Rockies - or despite Canada's "legalized same-sex marriage, universal health care, and not being taken as a joke internationally" - I'll never move there either! I know no matter how crappy our weather is, there's is 10 times worst!

I already told my daughter that if she moves away after she has grown, she'll have to go the American southwest to visit me!

SPIRITUALITY/RELIGION and CULTURE/SOCIETY: Get Tight with Christ

Zuhn from Vanity Run Amok was the one who steered me to this article, which unfortunately is no longer on the net. But I assure that it was in fact very real!

Report: Singapore retailer pulls "Jesus" cosmetics after complaints
Published: Tuesday, February 12, 2008 5:16 AM ET
Canadian Press: THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SINGAPORE - A cosmetics line that extols the virtues of "Looking Good for Jesus" has been pulled from stores in Singapore after some Catholics complained the items were disrespectful.

The Strait Times reports the product line included a "virtuous vanilla"-flavoured lip balm and a "Get Tight with Christ" hand and body cream.

Promising to "Redeem your reputation and more," cosmetics were sold by British retailer Topshop and produced by Blue Q.

The newspaper says Wing Tai Retail, which manages Topshop in the city-state, removed the range late last month after receiving complaints.

One of the complainants says the products trivialize Jesus Christ and Christianity.

An unnamed Wing Tai Retail official apologized for offending the Christian community.

As Zuhn said in her blog, a cosmetics tagline was not the first thing that came to mind. And I have to admit that I don't think Jesus would want me to get tight with him using hand cream! - OlderMusicGeek
