ENTERTAINMENT and POLITICS:The Ronny Horror Picture Show

I saw Man On The Moon and was looking up Andy Kaufman on the internet - and that led to the show, "Fridays" - which led me to this great mega-sketch.

I saw it when it was orinally showed on television and died laughing. I hope you enjoy it too. - OlderMusicGeek

Well, unfortunately, you got two not-so-good choices here. The first clip has a clear-ish picture like the above clip, but the sound is out of sync. The next clips have a fuzzier picture and they skip a bit, but the sound is in sync. - OMGeek

POLITICS and SPIRITUALITY/RELIGION: The Growing Clout of Atheists and Non-Believers

This is from AlterNet.org. I found it through a link from The Youth Federation on Twitter. - OlderMusicGeek

The Growing Clout of Atheists and Non-Believers
By Michelle Goldberg, The Guardian. Posted March 18, 2009.

In recent years, non-religious Americans have won a modicum of public acknowledgment. Not long ago, politicians insulted them with impunity or at best simply overlooked them. But the heightened public religious fervour of the Bush years led the country's infidels to organize as never before, turning atheist authors like Sam Harris into celebrities and opening lobbying offices in Washington, DC, just like religious interest groups do.

Politicians have responded. In his inaugural address, Barack Obama – doubtlessly realising that secularists constitute a big part of his base – described America as a "nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus ... and non-believers." Even Mitt Romney came to express second thoughts about leaving atheists and agnostics out of his high-profile campaign speech on faith. The United States is not Europe – it will likely be a long time before we have a publicly agnostic president – but it is becoming more tolerant of the godless.

It has to be: no religious group in the United States is growing as fast as those who profess no religion at all. The latest American Religious Identification Survey, which Trinity College published last week, shows that the number of non-religious Americans has nearly doubled since 1990, while the number of people who specifically self-identity as atheists or agnostics has more than tripled. An astonishing 30% of married Americans weren't wed in religious ceremonies, and 27% don't expect to have religious funerals. This suggests whole swaths of the culture are becoming secular, since one can assume that non-believers in religious families often acquiesce to traditional marriage rites and expect to be prayed over when they're dead.

The irony, though, is that even as the country becomes more secular, American politics are likely to remain shot through with aggressive piety. What we're seeing is not a northern European-style mellowing, but an increasing polarization. In his recent book Society without God: What the Least Religious Nations Can Tell Us About Contentment, the sociologist Phil Zuckerman described the secularized countries of Scandinavia as places where religion is regarded with "benign indifference". There's consensus instead of culture war. That's not what's happening in the United States. Instead, the center is falling out.

According to the American Religious Identification Survey, Christianity is losing ground in the United States, but evangelical Christianity is not. Just over a third of Americans are still born-again. Meanwhile, the mainline churches, beacons of progressive, rationalistic faith – the kind that could potentially act as a bridge between religious and non-religious Americans – are shrinking. "These trends … suggest a movement towards more conservative beliefs and particularly to a more 'evangelical' outlook among Christians," write the report's authors.

In some ways, there's a symbiotic relationship between evangelicals and secularists. The religious right emerged in response to a widespread sense of cultural grievance stemming from the social upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s. Today's newly organized atheists and agnostics were mobilized by the theocratic bombast of Bush-era Republicans. More than ever, one's religion is tied up with one's political choices rather than family history.

That means faith won't fade into the background. If European secularism is defined by disinterest in organized religion, American secularism is largely defined by opposition to it. Thus non-believers in the United States are increasingly becoming an organized interest group, demanding their share of civic respect. The more they want to escape organized religion, the less they can ignore it.

BAT BOY SCARES MALL SANTA
Posted on Friday, November 28th, 2008
By Allie Pruitt

BALTIMORE, MD - Bat Boy’s attempts at fitting in for the holidays have again failed miserably.

A lull in the line occurred when the children heard Best Buy had just received a shipment of Rock Band 2. Bat Boy, hiding in the cover of the giant Christmas tree, saw his one chance and took it. He scurried up to Santa, shrieking with excitement, and tried to hand over his guano-covered list.

Seeing only a blur of big pointy ears and sharp teeth, the mall Santa took off at high-speed, making it to the food court before tripping over his baggy red pants and crashing head first into the Cinnabon stand.

OBAMA INVITES ALIEN CHOIR TO WHITE HOUSE
Posted on Monday, December 8th, 2008
By Samuel T. Westbrook

WASHINGTON, DC - President-Elect Obama asserted influence this weekend, advising President Bush on which holiday choir to pick for the White House - and they’re aliens!

The Qwoak Intergalactic Boys Choir, famous for their recent holiday albums “I Saw Mommy Kissing Frozen Santa Claus” and “Rudolph the Twelve Nosed Reindeer,” have been performing choral choirs around the country.

Rahm Emmanuel, Obama’s Chief of Staff, was on the phone with current White House staff to get the Qwoak Intergalactic Boys Choir to be brought on as the official White House Choir this holiday season.

“The President-Elect is committed to using the White House as a platform for advancing and bettering the American culture,” Emmanuel said. “What better way to do that then by introducing Americans to the most talented artists, not just from America, not just from Earth, but the entire galaxy.”

ALIENS BUY UP BLACK FRIDAY DEALS
Posted on Friday, November 28th, 2008
By Samuel T. Westbrook

CHICAGO, IL – With the economy continuing its roller-coaster ride this week, retailers are expecting a different type of crowd.

Interplanetary shoppers are anticipated to make up as much as 74% of Black Friday shoppers. Americans are tightening their belts and keeping their wallets pocketed this holiday season as bonuses are cut and lay-offs looming right around the corner.

Although big box retailers like Wal-Mart and Best Buy have not seen significant growth during the financial crisis, online retailers of those same companies, as well as Amazon.com have noted that interplanetary and intergalactic sales are booming.

“If you thought it got ugly when hundreds of mid-westerners rush around a store trying to grab up sale items, just wait until six-armed, three-headed, slime-covered 14-foot tall aliens are fighting over a Tickle-Me Elmo.”

ALIENS USING KOTA TOYS TO DESTROY EARTH
Posted on Friday, December 19th, 2008
By Samuel T. Westbrook

TOKYO, JAPAN – Just days before Christmas, evidence has been found that exposes an alien plot to destroy the Earth and enslave mankind – using toys!

The Kota, a 40-inch robotic baby triceratops, is one of the most in-demand toys this holiday season. The first robot of its kind, a dinosaur children can ride, the Kota has been flying off shelves since its recent release and demand has yet to slow.

Representatives from Playskool, the company that supposedly manufactures and distributes the Kota, have declined to comment on the emerging details regarding a possible alien invasion.

Unnamed sources have leaked details to Weekly World News that some time after Christmas, once all of the Kotas have been opened from their boxes throughout the world, a signal will alert them to “wake up.”

POLITICS and CULTURE/SOCIETY: The Devolution Of The Baby Boom Generation

Ernest T Spoon sent me this in an email. I edited it down a bit. Here's a link to the complete piece. - OlderMusicGeek

Goodbye and Get Lost!
The Devolution of the Baby Boom Generation
By JOHN F. MIGLIO

Some people say that I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one.
--John Lennon

Although Albert Camus died before baby boomers took charge of the world and placed their redoubtable imprimatur on the political scene, he foreshadowed their eventual devolution in this prescient statement: "Conformity is one of the nihilistic temptations of rebellion which dominate a large part of our intellectual history. It demonstrates how the rebel who takes to action is tempted to succumb, if he forgets his origins, to the most absolute conformity. And so explains the twentieth century."

Camus was right, of course. As a baby boomer, it doesn't make me happy to say this; however, how else does one explain the "absolute conformity" (not to mention hypocrisy) of my once-rebellious generation? How else does one explain the disgraceful situation in which our country now finds itself?

We're the ones who created this mess. We're the ones who abrogated our political idealism and slowly but surely conformed to establishment power and corporate materialism. And we're the ones who allowed George W. Bush to slime his way into the presidency and bankrupt the country both economically and morally.

No wonder young people and Europeans hate our guts. The sad truth is, if you had told me in 1968 (40 years ago) that in 2008 the United States would be bogged down in another unnecessary war of choice that would kill thousands of American soldiers and hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians, I wouldn't have believed you. In fact, I would have said, "No, I think Americans have learned their lesson with Vietnam and won't make that mistake again."

If you had told me 40 years ago that Americans would eventually embrace free market economics, become slaves to multinational corporations, and allow the upper one per cent of the population to own 40% of its wealth, I would have laughed and said, "I agree with Mencken that Americans are not the brightest inhabitants on the planet, but they're at least smart enough to know when they're being played for saps!"

If you had told me 40 years ago that the stock market would crash in the late 1990s, that hundreds of thousands of citizens would lose their homes to foreclosures and that major banks would fail in 2008, I would have said, "Not possible! We learned our lesson from the Great Depression regarding the importance of strong government regulations and oversight of the real estate and financial markets!"

If you had told me 40 years ago that in 2008, the price of gas would be over $4 a gallon and that the country still wouldn't have an energy policy based on renewable energy rather than fossil fuels, I would have said, "Are you kidding? I just read the latest issue of Popular Science, and by the turn of the century Americans will all be riding in electric cars."

If you had told me 40 years ago that marijuana would still be illegal in 2008 and that over a third of our prison population would be in jail not because they hurt anyone but merely because they possessed drugs, I would have said, "Nah, by the turn of the century, even the most conservative stiffs will wake up and realize that making drugs illegal is a huge mistake."

If you had told me 40 years ago that 47 million Americans would not have health insurance in 2008 and that the accumulated debt on their medical bills would be the leading cause of bankruptcy, I would have said, "Americans are compassionate people. That could never happen."

If you had told me 40 years ago that the presidential elections of 2000 and 2004 would be stolen by the Republicans courtesy of the Supreme Court and Diebold, I would have said, "Nonsense! The Democratic Party would never stand for that!"

I could go on, of course, but you get the idea. So maybe I was a dreamer 40 years ago. Then again, my generation didn't exactly live up to expectations. So what's next for baby boomers? What's next for America? If Camus thought the 20th Century was an age of conformity, imagine what he would say about the 21st Century!

Lucky for us, no one reads Camus anymore. After all, he was French… and an intellectual… and a left-wing radical; everything Americans despise and distrust. They would never have a beer (much less a glass of wine) with someone like Camus. Americans like regular guys, like George W. Bush and John McCain.

POLITICS: What To Do With Our Rebate Checks

Well, I already put the text up 3 months ago, but Ernest T Spoon sent me some cartoons that go well with it, so I posting it again with the cartoons! Plus, I figured I better put them up while they're still topical! - OlderMusicGeek

How to use the rebate
As you may have heard the Bush Administration said each and every one of us would now get a nice rebate.
If we spend that money at Wal-Mart, all the money will go to China.
If we spend it on gasoline, it will all go to the Middle East.
If we purchase a computer, it will all go to India.
If we purchase fruit and vegetables, it will all go to Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala.
If we purchase a good car, it will all go to Japan.
If we purchase useless crap, it will all go to Taiwan and none of it will help the American economy.
We need to keep that money here in America, so the only way to keep that money here at home is to buy prostitutes and beer, since those are the only businesses still in the U.S.

POLITICS: Should Democrats Talk More of Morality?

This is 4 years old, but with this election, it's quite an interesting read. I don't remember where it came from. - OlderMusicGeek.

Letter from Bob Reich
November 4, 2004
*************************************

First, remember you're not alone.

Imagine standing in a room with 99 other people -- a random sample of America. 48 of them voted with you, against George Bush. All you need to do over the next few years is convince two of the others to join with you, and you've got a majority. We've got a majority.

Second, learn the power of a moral message (if you didn't know it already). Republicans ran on a moral agenda -- God, guns, gays, and true grit in fighting the evils of Saddam Hussein and terrorism. Democrats ran on a policy agenda -- affordable health care, deficit reduction, and combating terrorism through stronger international alliances and a smarter strategy. George Bush spoke about right and wrong in moral terms -- as matters of righteousness and faith. John Kerry spoke of right and wrong in pragmatic terms -- for example, saying he had the right way to get the economy moving again or to fight Al Qaida, and George Bush was going the wrong way.

I don't think most Americans rejected John Kerry's policies. It was Bush's moral vision they found more compelling. When politicians talk about having a plan for this or a policy for that, many eyes glaze over. But when they speak with righteous indignation -- with passion and conviction about what is morally right to do or morally offensive -- they can inspire the nation.

My recommendation to Democrats is not to become more religious. Religion is a personal matter. But perhaps Democrats need somewhat fewer plans and policies, and a bit more moral conviction. They also need to talk more about faith -- faith in what this great nation can accomplish if we work together.

Democrats used to talk in moral terms -- about fighting for civil rights, for example. What could Democrats say now and in the future? That it's morally wrong to give huge tax cuts to the rich while cutting social programs for the poor and working class -- especially when the gap between the rich and everyone else is wider than it's been in more than a century. That we have a moral obligation to give every American child a good education and decent health care. That it's morally wrong that millions of Americans who work full time don't earn enough to keep their families out of poverty. And much else.

My faith -- and yes, it is a matter of faith, a great leap of faith -- is that in all these respects, and many more, this nation can become a more just society.

I'm not saying Democrats have to adopt my particular moral positions. But unless or until Democrats return to larger questions of public morality, they won't inspire the American public. Plans and policies are important, of course. But there's no substitute for offering a vision of what we can become as a nation -- and giving citizens the faith we can get there.

So keep up the good fight. You're needed more now than ever.

-- Bob Reich

HUMOR and POLITICS: Uh, How Do You 'Lose' 1,000,000 Emails?

Here's Moby's take on how The White House lost 1,000,000 emails from his journal on his website. I found it through, of course, NetVibes. - OlderMusicGeek

i was just reading an article wherein it was revealed that the white house 'lost' 1,000,000 emails over a 2 1/2 year period.

uh, how do you 'lose' 1,000,000 emails?

can you imagine the uproar if gmail lost even 1/10th as many emails? they'd shut down in an instant.

but the white house loses 1,000,000 emails and it's business as usual?

just shrugged shoulders, a lop-sided gop grin, and 'oops'?

i have a theory as to where the emails went:
see, in a debate with john kerry, gw bush referred to 'the internets'. we thought he was just being an ignorant drunk, but maybe he was referring to multiple internets that exist in parallell dimensions? perhaps they've got these huge quantum computers that actually send email into OTHER DIMENSIONS?

so somewhere in a different dimension someone has been getting random emails from the white house? 1,000,000 random emails?

like, 'the vp's getting cranky and needs some cheering up, do we have any homeless people for him to shoot?' or, 'beelzebub called, needs to reschedule his 11 a.m with gw, how's 2pm instead?'

imagine the confusion on the part of the poor guy in the other dimension whose server keeps crashing with the 1,000,000 white house emails he's been receiving.

'zorgot! it happened again! and what's a "cheney"? where does this garbage come from?'

oh, 'zorgot' being the name of the spouse of the person whose server keeps crashing.

i mean, i guess that was pretty obvious, but i thought i'd spell it out nonetheless, what with 'zorgot' being a pretty common name in our closest parallel dimension, like 'john', or 'ahmed' here.

and i wonder, have/has the white house been receiving emails, too? emails from ANOTHER
DIMENSION??

and what do they say?

'VIOXXXX! ONLY $4.00! WOWW!!!! GOT NOW!! ALL GO!' but in an alien language?

i'm guessing that erectile dysfunction is a problem in other dimensions, too, even if the inhabitants of the other dimensions have multiple penises. see, multiple penises: multiple opportunities for the pharmaceutical companies in the other dimension, right? one man's flaccid is another mans $$$.

ENTERTAINMENT and POLITICS: Record Label Gives Iraq War Vets a Musical Voice

This is from Rolling Stone. I found it through my NetVibes page. I edited down for space. But here's a link to the complete article. - OlderMusicGeek

To The Fallen Records is a unique record label in that it puts out compilations of songs written and recorded by veterans of the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan – some even recorded in the field. On the occasion of the release of the new compilation To The Fallen Records Presents: Rock Vol. 1, Rolling Stone’s Evan Serpick took a look at the origins of the label. To read the full, in-depth exploration, click here.

In 2005, Army Sgt. First Class John Freeman III's platoon was drawn into a firefight with local insurgents in Iraq's Al-Anbar province, killing twenty-three Iraqis and suffering one casualty. Afterward, Freeman was approached by the platoon's chaplain, who encouraged him to attend church services. "I explained to him that it's kind of hard for me to go to church," says Freeman, 37. "It's hard to forgive myself when, tomorrow, I'm going to go out and do the exact same thing." Instead, Freeman sat down and wrote a song, "Don't Try and Save Me": "It's going to take more than time to wash away the pain," he sings over reverb-heavy electric guitars. "The bloodstains on my soul could never, ever come clean."

The messages range from patriotic anthems to Bush-bashing tirades. In "Sleeping Giant," metal band 10 Fold — fronted by Army Spc. Eric Conley, a Humvee gunner who patrolled the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad — lashes out at the terrorists who invoked American wrath: "Your God can't save you. . . . You'll be gone soon." Backed by the sounds of gunfire, Dirty Boi Vets — Marine Sgts. Tendaji Akil-Milele and Sugarray Henry — question their mission on "Combat Zone": "CO telling us we won't be that long/I still think we killing them for no reason."

POLITICS and ENTERTAINMENT: Moby's Take on Barack Obama

I got this from Moby's blog on MySpace. He talked about all the candidates, but I loved what he had to say about Barack Obama. - OlderMusicGeek

barack obama. first off, he has the single worst name anyone could ever have in the history of politics ever ever ever. barack(rhymes with iraq) hussein(like the guy who tried to kill gw's daddy) obama(one consonant away from bush family pal osama bin laden).

personally i see his terrible name as being kind of a plus, as it really couldn't be worse unless his name was satan hitler babyeater.

he's the least experienced of the candidates but he's also really smart and principled and telegenic. he seems like he would be fun at a barbecue but he'd also be good if you needed help doing your taxes and he'd definitely be nice to you if your goldfish died. ironically i think he's the democrats best chance to win. ironic, as he's:
a-inexperienced
b-1/2 muslim
c-possessed of the worst name in the history of politics

but gw was a coke addict with 2 dui's and a history of running companies into the ground(not to mention a last name that is colorfully and colloquially used to describe ladies baby making parts). so who knows? barack obama seems like the dem's best choice.

plus it would be awesome to have an african-american president. the rest of the world wouldn't be able to hate us as much, which would be nice.

and i hope that dennis kucinich runs every 4 years, because, not to sound shallow, it's great to have a healthy vegan with a beautiful wife running for president.

POLITICS: When Bush is Right, He's Right

Ultra-liberal, Ernest T Spoon, sent me this. It's from Progressive Daily Beacon. I do think the author gets a little carried away, but he makes some very good points. - OlderMusicGeek

When Bush is Right, He's Right
Silence Dogood, November 2nd, 2007

I don't often agree with George W. Bush but when he's right, he's right. Thursday Mister Bush said that the Democrats were like the people who ignored the rise of Hitler. He then went on to say that "the world paid a terrible price." And, sadly, he is 100 percent right! The Democrats have been entirely too quick to appease Mister Bush and Dick Cheney's fascist agenda.

Oh fine, Bush and Cheney haven't baked six million people in the ovens ... YET ... but you have to admit that the senseless slaughter of some one million Iraqis in an unprovoked war for oil is a pretty good start toward Hitler's mark. One can rest assured that the conflict with Iran will inch the Bush cabal ever closer to Hitler's sickening tally.

I love the corporate-owned media response to someone likening Bush and Cheney to Hitler: "Don't you think though, that they just have America's best interest at heart? Sure, they're obviously a bit misguided, but they're patriotic and really only doing what is best for America, don't you think?"

Sure, and Hitler figured it was in Germany's best interest to round-up Jews and to pitch them into the kiln. Also, one of the main reasons Hitler marched across Europe was to confiscate all the agricultural land and in the doing, to ensure a good and steady supply of food for his German master race. Hitler went to war to steal Poland's wheat, and Bush and Cheney went to war to steal Iraq's oil. Different time. Different resource. Same motivation and same result. And guess what? Many Democrats, including Hillary Clinton, voted in favor of Bush's Iraq blitzkrieg. And know what else? Many Democrats continue to support funding for the Bush-Cheney Iraq oil grab.

As a tasty aside, "shock and awe" was just a cool Neocon way of calling a "blitzkrieg" something other than a blitzkrieg. But ... err ... it was a blitzkrieg.

Yeah, gotta give Bushie credit where credit is due. He's never been more right in all his life! The Democrats are EXACTLY like the people who ignored the rise of Hitler.

Bush actually has a lot in common with Hitler. The German madman LOVED torture and secret prisons (ever hear of Auschwitz?). Of course, Hitler and the Nazi Party had the armed Schutzstaffel (Waffen SS) and Bush, Cheney, and the Republican Party have the North Carolina-based Blackwater. That's a paranoid observation, right? Well, Mister Bush and Cheney have swindled the American taxpayer out of nearly a billion dollars of funding for Blackwater. To put that figure into perspective, in terms of every country on the planet's annual military spending, that would put Blackwater in the top 50 percent. That is one huge taxpayer-subsidized private military. Hitler would have killed to have such a privatized force at his fingertips.

Of course the Democrats continue providing funding for Blackwater. And the Democrats continue to pass Bush-written legislation that guts the Constitution and undermines the peoples' rights and freedoms ... think FISA and domestic spying without warrants. So, oh yeah buddy! Bush is damned straight ... the Democrats are like the people who ignored the rise of Hitler.

POLITICS: Breaking News on The Office of The Presidency

This is another wonderful email sent to me by Ernest T Spoon.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congress today announced that the office of President of the United States of America will be outsourced as of April 1, 2006. The move is being made to save the $400K yearly salary and a record $521 billion in deficit expenditures and related overhead the office has incurred during the last 5 years.

"The cost savings should be significant," stated Congressman Thomas Reynolds (R-WA). Reynolds, with the aid of the Government Accounting Office, has studied outsourcing of American jobs extensively. "We cannot expect to remain competitive on the world stage with the current level of cash outlay," Reynolds noted. Preparations have been under way for some time and Mr. Bush was informed by email this morning of his termination.

Gurvinder Singh of Indus Teleservices, Mumbai, India, will be assuming the office of President as of April 1st. Mr. Singh was born in the United States while his Pakistani parents were vacationing at Niagara Falls, thus making him eligible for the position. He will receive a salary of US$320 a month, with no health coverage or other benefits. It is believed that Mr. Singh will be able to handle his responsibilities without a support staff.
Due to the time difference between the US and India, he will work primarily at night, when few offices of the US Government will be open so he should suffer few, if any, interruptions.

"Working nights will also allow me to keep my day job at the American Express call center," stated Mr. Singh in an exclusive interview. "I am excited about this position. I always hoped I would be President someday."

A Congressional spokesperson noted that while Mr. Singh may not be fully aware of all the issues involved in the office of President. He will rely upon a script tree and can address common concerns, without having to understand the underlying issues at all. "We know these scripting tools work," stated the spokesperson, "President Bush has used them successfully for years."

Following a two week waiting period after his final day in office, Bush will be eligible for $240 a week in unemployment pay for 13 weeks. He will not be eligible for Medicaid, as his unemployment benefits will exceed the allowed limit.

Mr. Bush has been provided the services of Manpower, Inc. to help him write a resume and prepare for his upcoming job transition. A Greeter position at Wal-Mart was suggested due to Bush's extensive experience shaking hands and smiling no matter what the circumstances.

Another possibility is Bush's re-enlistment in the Texas Air National Guard. His prior records are conspicuously vague but should he choose this option, he would likely be stationed in Waco for a month, before being sent to Iraq, a country he has visited. "I've been there, I know all about Iraq," stated Mr. Bush, who gained invaluable knowledge of the country in a visit to the Baghdad Airport 's terminal and gift shop.

Sources in Baghdad and Falluja say Mr. Bush would receive a tremendous welcome from local Iraqis. They have asked to be provided with details of his arrival so they might arrange an appropriate welcome.
