HISTORY - 99 Percent Invisible: Episode 138: O-U-I-J-A

 on

The Ouija board is so simple and iconic that it looks like it comes from another time, or maybe another realm. The game is not as ancient as it was designed to look, but those two arched rows of letters have been spooking people for over 125 years. Actually, the roots of the board go back even farther, according to Ouija historian Robert Murch. To understand where Ouija boards (generically called “talking boards”) come from, you have to go back to middle of the 1800s, to three sisters in New York.

The Fox Sisters claimed to be mediums to the spirit world. In public demonstrations, they would ask questions of the spirits and receive audible knocks back on the wall, which they would translate into letters of the alphabet. The sisters popularized the growing movement known as Spiritualism, which held that the living could contact the spirits of the dead, who had secret knowledge to impart.

During and after the Civil War, people who had lost loved ones became enchanted with the idea of communicating with the dead, and came up with all different ways to contact the spirit world. In 1886 the fledgling Associated Press ran an article in papers all over the country about these new “talking boards” coming out of the spiritualist movement in Ohio. A few years later in 1890, a businessman named Charles Kennard pulled together a small group of investors and formed the Kennard Novelty Company to exclusively make and market talking boards...

Ouija, it turned out, was also a great thing to do on a date. The original Ouija board was placed on your lap, so your knees would be touching your partner’s knees. Your fingers would be touching your partner’s on the planchette. You might be playing by candle light. However romantic Ouija may have been, it was still innocent enough for Normal Rockwell, who made a painting of a Ouija-playing  young couple that appeared in the Saturday Evening Post.

As of 2013, there’s a new version of the Ouija board, which has been redesigned to look even older than the classic board. “They’ve really gone for the older look,” says Ouija historian Robert Murch, “which is cool because people assume these boards have been around for thousands of years, which we know isn’t true, but belief is important to the Ouija board.”

Belief is very important to the Ouija board, especially subconscious belief. Which brings us finally, to how these things work.  In 1852,  an English physician and researcher named William Carpenter was studying Spiritualist phenomena, and coined the term “ideomotor effect.”  The ideomotor effect describes what happens when subconscious thoughts guide muscular movements.

According to Professor Chris French, of the Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit at Goldsmith’s University of London, the ideometer effect can explain why, on the Ouija board, the planchette seems to be moving on its own. In truth, the players are guiding its movement subconsciously.

Some researchers have even tried to study the subconscious using Ouija boards.

MY LIFE: How a crabby boy found his happy place!

Text from my girlfriend: 'I sarcastically told a very crabby son on the way to camp he needed to have a good attitude and find his happy place... After our water games turned into water wars and he was soaked head to toe, he comes running over to me and yells "I found my happy place!" '

CULTURE/SOCIETY: Valentine's Day Vs Vampire Day

This is from me, and is not some reprinted material. - OlderMusicGeek

A group of people wish to make Feb 14th Vampire Day.

Let me make it clear that a day for celebrating vampires sounds like a very fun day to me.

But these people want to co-op Valentine's Day. To quote - "It was started in 1995 when one night several college students got sick of all the talk about Valentine's day. It seemed that everyone had someone they where with or loved but this group of students. They decided then that Valentine's day was a segratory holiday. You had to have a love/lover to celebrate the holiday..."

To this, I have to say, "Waaaaah boo hoo! I'm a big nerd who can't get anyone on Valentine's Day. So I'm going to make them stop making me feel bad and play vampire instead!"

Give me a break! As a geeky nerdy dork, let me tell these people something... Get over yourselves!

If you can't get someone for Valentine's Day, then trying going out on a Saturday night instead of playing Dungeons And Dragons or White Wolf!

And it's not the end of the world if you don't have someone for Valentine's Day. Geez! Don't begrudge the lovers just cus you can't find anyone!

There's no rule saying you can't go out and do something else! Trust me, I've survived plenty of Valentine's Day without anyone. But I didn't whine that the others were "segregating" me because I didn't have anyone that year!

And there's no rule that says you even have to celebrate Valentine's Day. Most of the girls I dated didn't make a big deal of it! They prefered a guy who showed his affection any day.

So if you want to celebrate vampires, do it on it's proper day of Oct 30, and let the lovers have their day.

CULTURE/SOCIETY: My 5 Favorite Things Today

This is from me, OlderMusicGeek, not some reprinted article.

Got a bulletin on MySpace from a comedienne who lives in California but is originally from my home state. She talked about a couple of shows that she's doing in California - but with me living in the midwest, doesn't mean much to me.

But she also listed her 5 favorite things that day.

Top Five Favorites Today:
-The Game Cranium.
-Banana Bread.
-Clayton's Chiny Chin Chin.
-When my bed's made.
-Riding my bike.

Ugh, riding her bike - she's definitely become a Californian if riding her bike is a favorite thing in January!

But the game Cranium has always looked fun to me although I've never played it.

And I LOVE banana bread. Keep threatening to try to make it - even though I can't cook. - A roommate in college said that I wasn't a picky eater... because I ate my own cooking. -

And I like when my bed is made too. :) - Although I almost never make it until I go to bed.

I think she is referring my her boyfriend's chiseled chin in "Clayton's chiny chin chin", although I have to wonder how he feels about part of his face being referred to as a "chiny chin chin".

To make sure "Clayton's chiny chin chin" wasn't a restaurant or something, I did a google search. Nothing was there, but there was this rather humorous result -

Obviously Brandon's view: October 2007
But at any rate, Mr. Clayton:the author, really progressed from the initial ... slimy substance in his beard has saturated the hairs on his chiny chin chin. ...collie26.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html - 90k - Cached - Similar pages

I suppose Clayton also might refer to her cat. Maybe it likes having its chin scratched?

Well, anyway....

After I got this comedienne's list of her Top Five Favorites Today, I, of course, had to send my own list...

my 5 fave things today
1. 30 gig mp3 player
2. books on cds
3. no overtime for the past couple of weeks - but it wont be my fave thing if it keeps up - i need the money
4. my picked up apartment
5. my cat learning she will get wet if she keeps meowing for food when she knows my daughter feeds her when she gets here

What can I say? I love my music. I am The OlderMUSICGeek after all. :)

And ever since my daughter was born, I never seem to have time to read like I used to - so audio books are a godsend. And books on cds are even better than books on tape cus I can download them unto my mp3 player!

I have been working 50 hours a week for months on end. So this lower workload is a gift from the god - if there is one :) -

Picked up apartment? What can I say? My daughter and I are NOT known for our neatness. :)

And finally, I love our cat of one year. But if she hadn't learned to quit meowing - especially after the vet had us put her on a diet when she was too fat to clean her own butt - she might not have lasted a year!

I also added my 3 least fave things today - with a little commentary...

1. snow
2. ice
3. sleet
Don't you miss (my midwestern state)!

I HATE midwest winters!

I lived in Africa for 6 1/2 years and I missed many things from home. But ONE thing that I did NOT miss was our winters! Ugh! I hate them!

I will never understand why the any settlers stuck around here after the first winter! They didn't even have heat in their homes. Heck, I don't understand why any of the Native Americans stuck around!

But one thing that I should have added to my list of my least favorite things is an invitation on MySpace to be the friend of a woman whose picture is a professional shot of her in a swimsuit and whose description of herself on her page tells you where to go to see naked pictures of her! Ugh!

I'm done ranting for now. :) You can about your business.

HUMOR: Some Google Games with Your Name

My brother, Harmonica23 , sent me this via a MySpace bulletin -

----------------- Bulletin Message -----------------
From: Harmonica23
Date: Sep 1, 2006 9:05 PM

Alrighty, so I was messing about with Google and came across a few rather amusing quotes using my name and an action verb. You know the drill, put "Your Name Licked" in quotes and Google it.

Just to appease all the smartalecks:

No standard web pages containing all your search terms were found.

Your search - "Your Name Licked" - did not match any documents.

Now go do it the Right Way!

Harmonica23 ~ "Dave licked a dead guy . Pass it on"

I, myself, came up with this ditty - Dan licked his fingers then put them in his ears.

He also had a great one I've been meaning to pass one, but haven't got around to doing it. So now I finally will.

The same idea, but a different verb - "Your name looks like". Don't forget the quotes or you won't get the exact phrase.

Here's some from the first page. Most, if not all, seem to be referring to the Harry Potter actor.

Dan looks like something bigger flew up his butt
Dan looks like he is crack or something.., he's still hot... GO DAN!
Dan looks like he's been drinking. and what's that on his arm?
Dan looks like he's kind of checking out the Angel's rack
Dan looks like a potential candidate for Every 15 Minutes
Dan looks like a girl here, what with the plaited hair and broad hips
Dan looks like a bit of a nerd from the back lol!
