CULTURE/SOCIETY - 37 Things You’ll Regret When You’re Old

They say youth is wasted on the young. Are you wasting yours?

1. Not traveling when you had the chance.

Traveling becomes infinitely harder the older you get, especially if you have a family and need to pay the way for three-plus people instead of just yourself.

3. Staying in a bad relationship.

No one who ever gets out of a bad relationship looks back without wishing they made the move sooner.

5. Missing the chance to see your favorite musicians.

"Nah, dude, I'll catch Nirvana next time they come through town." Facepalm.

MY LIFE - 50 For My 50th Day 12: "Serengeti Long Walk" by Stewart Copeland and songs that remind what I thought about traveling Africa

For an explanation of "50 For My 50th", go here - http://oldermusicgeek.blogspot.com/2013/08/entertainment-50-for-my-50th-50-days-of.html

I was never actually at The Serengeti Plains, but this song captures some of the thoughts and feelings I had as I hitchhiked through The Kalahari Desert, rode horseback through a national park in Zimbabwe, rode through Namibia, among other places.

See these natural spectacles certainly puts you in a philosophical frame of mind. And these songs reflect that.

MY LIFE: A Visit To Peculiar Missouri, Part 3: The Robot Revolution And Why Peculiar Is Peculiar, And Not!

Sorry it's taken so long to get part 3 done. If it's any consolation, I'm already over half way done with the next post! - OlderMusicGeek

Now it was my turn to eat.

I skip the truck stop next to the freeway because I figure it will mostly have people pulling off the freeway for a bite to eat, and I want to go somewhere where all the Peculiar people go!

So we go to the u-shape strip mall where we saw a couple of the restaurants.

I go to a sandwich place first. It seems like it would be more Peculiar than the Mexican or Chinese place there.

It is strangely named with the simple “The Sandwich Shop”. It was if it was named by someone who did know how to name a sandwich place.

When I go to the door, I notice the place has no signs or menus on the wall and is completely empty of furniture except a counter, placed there as if it were some prop!

It was, of course, locked. So I went to the Mexican restaurant. But it also was locked and looked like it hadn't been used in ages. Also, it was looking like a prop with the front of the restaurant bare except for the sign with its name.

Then I went to the Chinese restaurant. Same story, locked, bare, only a sign, the same prop look.

“What the hell? Don't the people in this town eat?”

Of course, that's when it hit me! Do they? The only restaurants that were open were the two that get business from the freeway!

Good Lord, did we stumble into a town of robots? Cannibals? Human-eating aliens?

Then I remembered there was still the greasy spoon further in town. It was a risk, but by god, I had to see it through.

So I hopped in the car and drove further into this town of danger and mystery!

Unfortunately, the danger and mystery wasn't very forthcoming. The diner was your typical small town diner. Old and a bit run down, but clean and well taken care of.

And the two teenagers working there were your typical laid back teenagers. The girl dressed in shorts and t-shirt. No long skirt like someone who didn't know how people really dress.

And the guy wore jeans that hung off his buttocks. And he snuck peaks at the girl in the shorts when she wasn't looking. Damn it, typical teenager behavior, not like robots at all!

About the only thing peculiar going on that diner was the half-white, half-black kid sitting alone leaned back in her chair bobbing her head to her iPod. But that's pretty typical behavior for my daughter.

And everyone who came in while I waited for my food were annoyingly normal! My god, did I somehow get to Normal, Illinois, by mistake? Was that what made this town peculiar? It sent you through some space anomaly to Normal? But then why was everything named Peculiar This and Peculiar That?

I finally couldn't take it anymore! I asked one of the other customers if she was from Peculiar. I think she started to think I was peculiar! Imagine that!

Anyway, she said she wasn't originally from there, but had been living there for over fifteen years. So I asked her if she knew why the town was called “Peculiar”.

She gave a story that pretty follows what the website for the town of Peculiar said.

The story basically goes like this...

The early settlers had a hard time picking a name for their little spot on the map. After arguing over it a few times in the general store, they sent three names to the post office, who I guess makes the town names official.

Well, it seems the three names the settlers chose were already taken, so the fed up town told the post-master general that they didn't care what they got “so long as it is sort of peculiar”.

Apparently the post-master general either had a sense of humor or was a smart ass... or maybe he was just fed up with town. Or possibly all three!

But he wrote to the town, “in all the land it would be difficult to imagine a more distinctive, a more peculiar name than Peculiar.” And that, supposably, is how the town got it's name... and not because it's populated by aliens, demons or robots, dang it!

So that pretty much concluded our adventures in Peculiar. I ate my chicken sandwich, which tasted fine and not funny at all. Then I got in the car, and my daughter and I hopped on the Peculiar exit and head out town, and I must say we did so rather disappointed.

But I guess now, one of these days, when we go to Chicago, we'll have to check out just how normal Normal, Illinois, really is...

CULTURE/SOCIETY: My Mother Picks Up Hitch-Hikers

This is another piece that I was going to put up for Mother's Day, but my poopy-butt computer and internet service stopped me! Grrrr!

It's from the blog with the best title around, Raggedy Ann In A Barbie Doll World. - OlderMusicGeek

My mother picks up hitchhikers.

She believes that she has an obligation to be a good Samaritan. Once, when I was in high school, we picked up this old woman who looked a little blue around the lips and was having trouble breathing. Mom wanted to take her to the hospital, but the old lady insisted that she just wanted to go home.

It was dark, and we drove out of town and down into the woods. The lady didn't talk except to give us directions. Finally, after we turned off the main road and down into a thick copse of trees, even my unflappable mother was beginning to look a little nervous.

The lady asked my mom to stop the car and let her out. There wasn't a house- or even a light- in sight. We asked her if she was sure this was the right place. She said yes and got out of the car. We laughed nervously and drove away.

My mother makes adventures.

Mother's Day 2004, we spent the whole day seeking out “Rock House,” a natural bridge and historical site deep in Eastern Kentucky. We drove for hours, ate diner food, and discovered deserted little ghost towns full of sagging porches and family cemeteries. Amazingly, with no map and directions that included the phrase, “maybe,” entirely more than I was comfortable with, we found it. A biker gang was hanging out beneath the bridge, and my mother made friends with them.

We hiked to the top, and the view was breathtaking. It was worth the snakes and the lack of gas stations and the sunburn.

My mother is spontaneous.

She just called me this morning, high from her first time seeing the redwood forests. She was nearly weeping at their beauty.

Earlier this week, she got off work in Arizona, got in her car and drove 14 hours to San Andreas, CA. She's a travel nurse, and in Cali, it's easier to get a license in person than it is to get one by mail. She finished earlier than expected and got back into her car and drove another four hours to the national park. She lucked out and got a lodge room next to the waterfalls. She slept and then spent two glorious days hiking around the wilderness.

On the road back to Arizona, she called my father, who lives in Palm Springs, and invited him and his partner to have dinner with her. They agreed. Mom spent the night with them and then went back to Arizona, where she worked three nights in a row. She's getting ready to go to bed now, and I know she'll sleep well.

When I was younger, I resented my mother's spontaneity, her compassion, her adventurousness. It was a little like living with a really good thunderstorm. Exciting and beautiful, but often you were soaking wet and a little uncomfortable. My life was unplanned, and my social life suffered for it.

But look what I got in return! Ghost stories and wonder. I wouldn't trade them.

Last week, while my mom was hiking around the wilderness, I was working in the basement of a client's site. But in the evenings, I emerged blinking in the new spring sun, and explored the little town. I ate at local diners and walked around their lake. I read about the Indian Burial Mounds and explored the woods.

This is my mother's gift to me, and I am blessed every time I turn off of the paved road.

ENTERTAINMENT and CULTURE/SOCIETY: My Personality Compared to Movies

What Classic Movie Are You?

personality tests by similarminds.com

Well, I wasn't quite sure what to make of this result when I first saw it. I thought, "Well, this thing is totally off." But the more I thought about it, they more it made sense. After all, I did do a junior year abroad thing in England where I traveled by train by myself over much of Europe and did hitchhike across Wales, England and Scotland. Then after college, I lived in a small country in southern Africa for 6 years and another southern African country for six months. And I traveled around by hitchhiking checking out 4 different countries there. So I guess I am a bit of an adventurer, though I haven't travel much like that since becoming a dad. But I would do some safer traveling with my daughter if I had the money.

But I still think I'm more like "Prof. Jones" than "Indiana"!

So takes the results of this test as you will.

Now this other test...
The Movie Of Your Life Is A Cult Classic

Quirky, offbeat, and even a little campy - your life appeals to a select few.
But if someone's obsessed with you, look out! Your fans are downright freaky.

Your best movie matches: Office Space, Showgirls, The Big Lebowski
If Your Life Was a Movie, What Genre Would It Be?

This sounds a lot more like me. A lot of people find me weird, quirky, offbeat and strange. But the people who seem to like me seem to really like me quite a bit. The others just think, "O-kay!" Sounds like a cult classic to me.
