CULTURE/SOCIETY - Patton Oswalt’s Facebook Post After Boston Bombing Strikes A Nerve, Goes Viral On Social Media

The reports will continue as new details emerge, as victims get better or worse; as information about the perpetrators is discovered and revealed. But in the midst of all the horror, noise, and grief, we are still a community of humans, most of us struggling to live good lives and keep the planet from spinning completely out of control. And sometimes the way that’s done is with words. With just the right words. And it seems today the right words were spoken by comedian Patton Oswalt, a man known more for being funny than particularly inspirational, but whose Facebook posting about the tragedy appears to have struck a nerve. It started slowly and became a viral phenomenon as more and more people spread those same words throughout social media.

CULTURE/SOCIETY and ENTERTAINMENT: Six Word Memoirs

From NPR's Talk of the Nation...

Talk of the Nation
February 7, 2008

Once asked to write a full story in six words, legend has it that novelist Ernest Hemingway responded: "For Sale: baby shoes, never worn."

In this spirit of simple yet profound brevity, the online magazine Smith asked readers to write the story of their own lives in a single sentence. The result is Not Quite What I Was Planning, a collection of six-word memoirs by famous and not-so-famous writers, artists and musicians. Their stories are sometimes sad, often funny — and always concise.

The book is full of well-known names — from writer Dave Eggers ("Fifteen years since last professional haircut"), to singer Aimee Mann ("Couldn't cope so I wrote songs"), to comedian Stephen Colbert ("Well, I thought it was funny").

The collection has plenty of six-word insights from everyday folks as well: "Love me or leave me alone" was scrawled on a hand dryer in a public bathroom; "I still make coffee for two" was penned by a 27-year-old who had just been dumped.

Larry Smith, founding editor of Smith magazine, and Rachel Fershleiser, Smith's memoir editor, talk about the experience of capturing real-life stories in six words — no more, no less.

Fershleiser's six-word memoir? "Bespectacled, besneakered, read and ran around." And Smith's: "Big hair, big heart, big hurry."

SPIRITUALITY/RELIGION: An Interesting Description of Christianity

This is a description of Christianity that I found in one of the profiles of one of the people is SecondLife. I found interesting and amusing enough to pass on. - OlderMusicGeek

"The universe was created by an all-powerful all-knowing being who came down to us in the form of a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father who can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree."

Posted by: Prophet May 31, 2007 11:07 PM in the Washington Post Online

I don't think Prophet was the originator of this quote. In fact, it shows up on the net before that date, but I have no idea where it came from.

It does though reminded me of what I said to some fellow non-Christians when I let my Catholic ex baptize our daughter. - She was worried about our daughter's soul and I didn't want my ex to worry about that. But I would have preferred to let my daughter choose for herself whether to be baptized or not. -

I told them that I let my (then) wife's local magic man performed a protection spell on our daughter using their magic water. :)

Oh, and Jesus was a vampire too - They drank his blood as well!
