CULTURE/SOCIETY: Why I Haven't Written For So Long And Why Zuhn Thinks Other Bloggers Write

Okay, I know it's been over a month! What can i say? I'm sure my four regular readers are suffering from severe withdraw!

*I stare into the auditorium and wave at The Computer/Music Nerd, Tudor Rose, The "Jamaican" and some guy from Ireland.*

I could give lots of excuses - for instance.. I just went off a medication that I had been taking for 6 months and one of the withdraw symptoms was insomnia, so I was too dead tired to sleep. And my computer is acting up, making my internet connection re-e-e-e-e-eal slow sometimes. Also, I had been working lots of extra hours. Plus, it's finally warm and I got spring fever! - If my slowing down of postings from the blogs I read is any indication, it seems a lot of people have something better to do than sit in front of a computer, now that it is FINALLY warm again!

I could say those things, but I won't!

I am going to try to get back to the grindstone again. I make no promises though. It depends, in part, how my sleep goes - and how busy I am this summer!

But I have started Twitter, so you can keep up with me there. Though I'll probably add my "tweets" here anyway.

In fact, here's my first one - well, i'm finally starting twitter after a couple of years. i broke down because i wanted to respond to my friend's tweets! from web

Funny thing is - I'm having trouble figuring out how to respond to people's tweets!

But in the meantime, here's an old piece by one of the bloggers I read regularly, Zuhn...

oh boy!
Posted on Monday 4 April 2005

Well, in full procrastination mode, I have been scanning through some random blogs. I have discovered three trends. One, blogs written by funny, insightful people usually in the freelance writing/editing business. Two, blogs written by religious freaks out to spread their love for Jesus just in case God got bored and decided to google “God” and happened onto their inane-youth-league touting blog and then God said “Well, obviously a devoted soul, let me put his name down on the guest list to heaven”. And three, blogs written by boring people who tell us about their boring little lives like someone will actually read it, all the while dreaming of their immanent popularity. I think I’m quickly falling into that third category. I hope not.

CULTURE/SOCIETY: Tudor Rose's Evolution

Tudor Rose actually wrote this a couple of months back. I meant to reprint because I like it so much. I just spaced it off with Christmas and all.

evolve

One of the poems included in my BFA thesis ended with the lines You have become nothing more/than a life support system for your cunt. Telling the story of a very bad decision I made my senior year of college, those two lines represented what I thought was true of myself at the time: that I was worth nothing more than what could be shown between the sheets. That while I was intelligent and articulate enough, my mouth was only good for one thing and the only way I could keep myself in a man's life was to keep myself in his bed.

That was four years ago and there is no possible way to really express the amount and level of change that has taken place in those fours years. As it is, I don't like to reflect too much on the past, except in recognizing that past events and situations have made me who I am today. I've generally been more concerned with thinking about the future, but only recently have I started to think and appreciate the present. So, on the heels of the good doctor, here is my list of twenty things that make me who I am at this moment:

  • I know who I am and what I need to be satisfied and happy in life

  • But, more importantly, I'm no longer afraid to ask for those things that make me happy, and I found that I have the strength to leave a situation where that satisfaction isn't found.

  • Despite what society and self-help books tell us, it is always better to be single than to settle.

  • I have believed for years that I have always been a redhead, biology just fucked up and made me a blonde by accident.

  • I know what it means to love and be loved, unconditionally. This is the first time I have ever been in a relationship where I feel loved inside and out, light and dark. This is also the first relationship that is balanced between lovers and friends, a balance I have spent years trying to create in other relationships but happened naturally and organically this time around.

  • Beauty cannot be measured by a number on a scale.

  • Chloe the Pussy is -- and I anticipate, will remain -- the best purchase I have ever made.

  • I once participated in a threesome with two guys, though I stopped it halfway through. That was the exact moment where I stopped living life for my cunt and started living it for myself.

  • It took me 26 years to get here, but I am financially independent from my parents.

  • Moving to Kentucky was the best decision I ever made. I spent my entire life in the same town in Ohio, believing I'd never leave, too afraid to take the steps necessary. I now have no intention of going back: there are too many adventures in too many cities to be had.

  • I am an atheist. Religion to me is a personal matter: I don't care what, or who, you believe in, just don't expect me to believe the same and don't approach the situation as though your believe and faith makes you better or smarter than me. I am more than willing to discuss my beliefs, as long as it's a discussion and not me being told I'm wrong and going to hell.

  • I am also an existentialist. I am where I am today because of the choices I made, of following through on those choices and accepting whatever consequences came from them, not because of a deity's master plan for the cosmos.

  • My friends mean more to me than my family.

  • Sex is an expression of an individual and everybody should be allowed, and encouraged, to explore those things that make them tick, as unconventional as they may be.

  • I believe the accepted term for my sexuality is "bi-curious," and I am more than okay never actually taking the curiosity into reality.

  • I can have moments of OCD. I have been told this will serve me well in my future career as a librarian.

  • I have never liked the phrase "making love," but only in the past few months have I learned what that phrase actually means.

  • Leaving my ex was the hardest, and scariest, decision I ever made. A decision that took me three months to actually make out of that fear. But in doing it and surviving, I proved to myself that I have a lot more courage than I ever imagined.

  • With enough patience and persistence, you can have the life you want, and have the people you want in it.

  • I am, and always have been, a work in progress. I am fluid, constantly changing, always evolving. The day I stop evolving will be the day I have given up on myself. I hope to never reach that day, and believe I have people in my life who won't let me.

CULTURE/SOCIETY: Modern Mathematics for the Practical Man

This is from Tales of a Librarian, a great blog you should all read! - OlderMusicGeek

05 March 2008
modern blogging for the practical librarian

In an effort to reorganize and become more efficient! and effective!, the Center I work for took over half of our library with the intention of turning it into work spaces, and our storage area was given to another department. A storage area that was filled with lots and lots of books. Books my supervisor now wants to sell. Books I'm typing up into a list for that purpose.

One book I came across was Modern Mathematics for the Practical Man, published 1963. Even better, it's a whole series: Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus. All for the Practical Man. Apparently the practical woman is not in need of modern mathematics. Or any mathematics. No, she's stuck working with the ol' abacus. But at least it will match the pearl necklace all those pregnant housewives wore while barefoot in the kitchen.

Also, in a Freudian-slip-of-the-fingers, when I typed in an author's last name "Hickinbottom," it came out "Kickinbottom." I was way more amused by it than probably warranted.

CULTURE/SOCIETY: Thirty is the New Black?

I found this on one of the blogs I keep an eye on my netvibes.comhomepage. Being in my 40s, I found this amusing and have added a few comments of my own at the end. - OlderMusicGeek.

thirty is the new black

When I arrived at work today, I saw that signs had been posted around the building notifying everyone that today was the birthday of H., one of our HR girls. There was a big, colorful "Happy Birthday" banner outside of her office and smaller signs had been taped to various walls and doors saying "H. is 30 today!" These smaller signs also had some sort of clip art on them, but it wasn't until I got closer I noticed it was a picture of the grim reaper with the words OVER THE HILL!

Ah, how I remember those days when I had aunts and uncles making a big deal about turning 50. Then there was the year my dad turned 40 and everybody at his office wore black armbands and passed out black roses to all the employees. But 30? Is this really the new scary age? Most people don't even figure out who the (intercourse) they are until their mid-twenties, and that's if they are incredibly fortunate, which doesn't leave much time to win the Triple Crown before being put out to pasture (Yeah. I know. But I've spent the past year living in two of the biggest horse cities around. So sue me.)

What does this mean for my relationship, where one of us is over the hill and one of us is still climbing it? (And, just by looking at our blogs, I'm fairly certain it's pretty obvious which one of us is still in the prime of her life, given that I have the fun, pink, perky layout. Oh. Wait....). A six-year age difference doesn't seem like much, but when looked at from this perspective, why, it's practically a may-december romance.

I'll be 27 when I graduate with my master's degree, so I suppose it's best to know this sort of information sooner rather than later. Though it's a little daunting to think that as soon as I get a job I'm going to have to start planning my retirement from it. I guess it's just a good thing I was smart enough to spend my twenties going to school for careers that guarantee lots and lots of money.
