SCIENCE/TECHNOLOGY: WILL SMART MACHINES CREATE A WORLD WITHOUT WORK?

An Associated Press analysis of employment data from 20 countries found that millions of midskill, midpay jobs already have disappeared over the past five years, and they are the jobs that form the backbone of the middle class in developed countries.

That experience has left a growing number of technologists and economists wondering what lies ahead. Will middle-class jobs return when the global economy recovers, or are they lost forever because of the advance of technology? The answer may not be known for years, perhaps decades. Experts argue among themselves whether the job market will recover, muddle along or get much worse.

MY LIFE: My take on the town of Humansville!

We passed by a town in Missouri called "Humansville"! I said it sounded like the name of a homo sapien ghetto on a robot planet, or a really bad name that a town of aliens came up with to hide what they were!

My daughter and my girlfriend, for some reason, gave me weird looks!

MY LIFE: A Visit To Peculiar Missouri, Part 3: The Robot Revolution And Why Peculiar Is Peculiar, And Not!

Sorry it's taken so long to get part 3 done. If it's any consolation, I'm already over half way done with the next post! - OlderMusicGeek

Link to Part 2

Now it was my turn to eat.

I skip the truck stop next to the freeway because I figure it will mostly have people pulling off the freeway for a bite to eat, and I want to go somewhere where all the Peculiar people go!

So we go to the u-shape strip mall where we saw a couple of the restaurants.

I go to a sandwich place first. It seems like it would be more Peculiar than the Mexican or Chinese place there.

It is strangely named with the simple “The Sandwich Shop”. It was if it was named by someone who did know how to name a sandwich place.

When I go to the door, I notice the place has no signs or menus on the wall and is completely empty of furniture except a counter, placed there as if it were some prop!

It was, of course, locked. So I went to the Mexican restaurant. But it also was locked and looked like it hadn't been used in ages. Also, it was looking like a prop with the front of the restaurant bare except for the sign with its name.

Then I went to the Chinese restaurant. Same story, locked, bare, only a sign, the same prop look.

“What the hell? Don't the people in this town eat?”

Of course, that's when it hit me! Do they? The only restaurants that were open were the two that get business from the freeway!

Good Lord, did we stumble into a town of robots? Cannibals? Human-eating aliens?

Then I remembered there was still the greasy spoon further in town. It was a risk, but by god, I had to see it through.

So I hopped in the car and drove further into this town of danger and mystery!

Unfortunately, the danger and mystery wasn't very forthcoming. The diner was your typical small town diner. Old and a bit run down, but clean and well taken care of.

And the two teenagers working there were your typical laid back teenagers. The girl dressed in shorts and t-shirt. No long skirt like someone who didn't know how people really dress.

And the guy wore jeans that hung off his buttocks. And he snuck peaks at the girl in the shorts when she wasn't looking. Damn it, typical teenager behavior, not like robots at all!

About the only thing peculiar going on that diner was the half-white, half-black kid sitting alone leaned back in her chair bobbing her head to her iPod. But that's pretty typical behavior for my daughter.

And everyone who came in while I waited for my food were annoyingly normal! My god, did I somehow get to Normal, Illinois, by mistake? Was that what made this town peculiar? It sent you through some space anomaly to Normal? But then why was everything named Peculiar This and Peculiar That?

I finally couldn't take it anymore! I asked one of the other customers if she was from Peculiar. I think she started to think I was peculiar! Imagine that!

Anyway, she said she wasn't originally from there, but had been living there for over fifteen years. So I asked her if she knew why the town was called “Peculiar”.

She gave a story that pretty follows what the website for the town of Peculiar said.

The story basically goes like this...

The early settlers had a hard time picking a name for their little spot on the map. After arguing over it a few times in the general store, they sent three names to the post office, who I guess makes the town names official.

Well, it seems the three names the settlers chose were already taken, so the fed up town told the post-master general that they didn't care what they got “so long as it is sort of peculiar”.

Apparently the post-master general either had a sense of humor or was a smart ass... or maybe he was just fed up with town. Or possibly all three!

But he wrote to the town, “in all the land it would be difficult to imagine a more distinctive, a more peculiar name than Peculiar.” And that, supposably, is how the town got it's name... and not because it's populated by aliens, demons or robots, dang it!

So that pretty much concluded our adventures in Peculiar. I ate my chicken sandwich, which tasted fine and not funny at all. Then I got in the car, and my daughter and I hopped on the Peculiar exit and head out town, and I must say we did so rather disappointed.

But I guess now, one of these days, when we go to Chicago, we'll have to check out just how normal Normal, Illinois, really is...

ENTERTAINMENT: Bender, A True Hero

This in from the In Character blog on NPR.org. - OlderMusicGeek

Your Turn: Bender Bending Rodriguez

From Futurama, created by Matt Groening
Nominated by Travis Larchuck

The short-lived and then revived animated program Futurama features a futuristic New York populated by aliens and mutants. So it's ironic that the most human character on the show is a robot by the name of Bender Bending Rodriguez.

Bender was designed only to bend steel rods, but he would much rather sit on the couch and watch TV all day. He fuels himself by drinking beer. He swears. He's addicted to gambling and pornography (which consists of computer circuitry diagrams). He dreams of becoming a master chef, taking over the world and killing all humans. Who among us can't identify with those urges?

Despite his flaws, Bender has a heart. He stays true to his best friend, Fry. And when he is accidentally launched into space and gets to meet God, the lesson he learns ("you can't count on God for jack") is something we can all use.

Al Gore is cool to me because he appeared in Futurama not just once! But twice! And once when he was still vice-president!

Admittedly, his daughter was a writer on
Futurama, but still...

CULTURE/SOCIETY: My Daughter as Prey (Don't Be Sick People!)

This is from me, not some reprinted article. - OlderMusicGeek

My daughter, a while back, was talking about how her and her classmates learned of the dog breed known as the shih tzu.

Of course, they had a blast with that. Apparently, making the usual jokes of stepping in a shih tzu and what-not.

So I told my daughter, "It's a good thing that you guys didn't hear about the breed, fukka tu."

My daughter looks at me really shocked and surprised. "Is there really a breed like that?!"

Not being able to keep a straight face, I told her no and waved her off.

But this reminded me of a time when she was much younger. We were driving on the interstate and we saw some cows.

"Look, Daddy, cows!" shouted my daughter in excitement.

"Oh yeah, I see them," I answered in mock excitement.

"Are those real cows?"

"Oh, no. The real cows died years ago and have been replaced by robot cows."

With some confusion, my daughter went, "Ohhh."

But my then wife happened to be in the car and she called me on it. She might not have known that much about America, but she wasn't about to accept robot cows!

So I had to admit to my daughter that the cows were real.

When I told some co-workers about these two incidents, one of them said, "She's not your daughter! She's your prey!"

CULTURE/SOCIETY: Robot Rights - A Poser for the 21st Century

Nothing new here for science fiction fans. But I'm printing it anyway. :)

This is from the English newspaper, The Guardian. - Why are the Europeans always ahead of us on trends? - I found this article through my home page from NetVibes. - OlderMusicGeek

Robot rights - a poser for the 21st century
James Randerson, science correspondent
The Guardian,Wednesday January 16 2008

The fight against discrimination based on race, gender, class and sexuality may not yet be won, but experts in artificial intelligence are warning that this century societies will have to tackle a new prejudice - against individuals with brains made of silicon.

Even the most enthusiastic promoters of robot rights admit that it is likely to be mid-century before humanity has to grant legal rights to our creations, but they say we should start considering the problems now.

Dr Nick Bostrom, a philosopher at the University of Oxford, said that even though present-day robots are not cognitively very impressive they should not be written off. "I don't think you should ever say never, especially with regard to technology. There's no good reason whatever for being confident that robots will not reach human-level intelligence and indeed pass human-level intelligence."

At a conference yesterday in London organised by the Centre for Bioethics and Public Policy, he predicted a time when robots become so intelligent they will need to be granted equivalent rights to humans. "If it has the same experience and the same capabilities we shouldn't treat it any differently if it is made of silicon rather than carbon." Those rights might include owning property and a bank account and the right not to be turned off.

But Professor Noel Sharkey, a robotics expert at the University of Sheffield, doubts that robots will ever achieve that sort of intelligence. "I can't deny that this is possible, but as a scientist there's absolutely no evidence for it."

HUMOR and ENTERTAINMENT: What I Learned from Science Fiction

1. Radiation doesn't necessarily kill people. It just causes them to turn into hideous mutants that must be killed by the few people who magically escaped the radiation.

2. Radiation doesn't necessarily kill animals. Instead, it usually causes them to increase in size. To such a size, that they can eat people and knock over buildings.

3. There is no threat to world destruction, which a specially placed nuclear explosion can't stop.

4. All aliens are either smooth-skinned, big-headed creatures, reptiles or green.
- If they are the smooth-skinned, big-headed kind, they consider themselves our intellectual superiors who look at us in disgust, and want to enslave us.
- If they are the reptilian kind, they just want to EAT us.
- If they are the green kind, they just want to destroy us and take our planet.

5. In the year 2000, we will be driving around in flying cars.

6. In the year 2000, everyone will have a robot servant to do all the menial chores, but those robots will turn against us.

7. In the year 2000, we will have colonies on the moon, and a flight to the moon will be like a flight to California today.

8. In the distant future, the human race will evolve into smooth-skinned, big-headed creatures who will consider themselves our superiors and look at us in disgust, and probably think we'd make pretty good slaves.

9. Many planets that have never known the human race still have females that are really hot by human standards.

10. You can't be a star ship captain if you aren't buff.

11. Every starship must have a beautiful, hot babe and an aloof scientist type.

12. It is SO possible to travel faster than the speed of light.

13. If you travel back in time, you can't change major events, but you can change minor events. Or if you change major events, it will always make things change for the worse, so you have to go back and fix it.

14. In the future, all clothes will be made out of shiny metallic silvery material.

15. Hair styles will be exactly the same as in the past.

16. People CAN survive a nuclear war.

17. Even though the human race will live in peace and harmony, all the best jobs are taken by white males.

18. Even though the human race will live in peace and harmony with many other alien races, humans, mostly white males, will have all the important jobs.

19. Even though the galaxy is full of different and unique alien races, the race that occurs naturally on many different planets is the human race.

20. Although humans went from using the steam engine to traveling to the moon in about 100 years, it took the other races thousands of years. And because the humans' technology has advanced more quickly than their morals, they are a danger to the other races.
